EXCELLENT! Hot Crispy Belgium Waffles! Some waffle makers don't get hot enough and you wind up with steamed waffles that take forever to cook. This maker heats up fast, cooks fast and makes big crispy waffles. You can completely trust the indicator lights too. When its ready its ready. The non-stick coating is very good as well. You won't need the mess of non-stick sprays. Really love this machine. Pretty easy to clean too with wet or dried batter wiping right off the surfaces. The overflow tray at the bottom could probably be a little bigger since batter can still drool onto the counter top. I put paper towels underneath for each cleanup. 5Makes great waffles but has some issuesGood: Removable surface makes cleaning easier. Gets plenty hot to make delicious, crisp waffles, pancakes and paninis.Bad: the latch that holds the top griddle surface in place keeps failing. When I open it up to get my delicious waffle, the 500 surface falls off, onto my waffle, usually burning me AND my waffle. Total pain. I've bent the latch over a bit to hold the griddle in place, but it keeps happening. Also, the exterior of the waffle maker gets red hot, so keep kids in the other room. And there are no instructions, so I had to experiment a lot until I got it right. Lots of spilled mix, counter cleanup and bad waffles. But now that I've dialed it all in, I'm the waffle king. 2A fantastic waffle maker for a good price. My wife and I were introduced to the double waffle makers when we were out of town, visiting some family. My wife happens to love waffles and the fact that we could do two at once was a winning sales point for us. Our old waffle maker would do two squares and take forever so one of us could eat a hot, fresh waffle and the other had to wait while another one cooked. The Black & Decker waffle maker was less expensive than the brand that we were introduced to but was more in our price range so we decided to give it a try. In short, we love it. Now we can do two waffles at the same time. This waffle maker cooks quickly and evenly. We can each start eating our first waffle and the next batch is done before we finish the first waffles we cooked. It does not have a light to tell you when the waffles are cooked, but the instructions say to go until there is no longer steam rising from the sides of the waffle plates. We have done it this way every time and have yet to burn a waffle.Give it a try, you won't be disappointed! 5Inconsistent cook times. So I was really excited about this product, but I continually realize you get what you pay for. There are a couple of issues with the product. 1. Inconsistent cooking times. Whether you're making 1 or 2 waffles, it appears that power regulation is a problem. Sometimes it's 4 min, sometimes it's six min. The problem is if it happens to be a 6 min waffle and you try to open at 4 min, the waffle splits and creates all sorts of problems. Obviously if it's a four min waffle and you wait six minutes - it's burnt. 2. The middle part of the griddle (which cooks both waffles) is hotter and cooks faster than the griddles on the outside. So you get overcooked waffles on one side and under-cooked on the other. So even if you get the timing right, it's still not cooked properly. 1Weak core construction.I am 69 yo and have loved this appliance since I was married in 1970.Upon returning to the USA in 2016, I realized that left mine in Aruba. So, I ordered from Amazon. It came dented and broken. But, happily, it was replaced.I am so sad as itisnow such poorly constructed product. The grille plates don't fit securely. Both side handles have fallen off. It really is a nuisance to use now. It is clumsy and I am easily burned. I fear that, unless improved quality and old standards are put in place, I cannot recommend. 2I love it!Black and Decker waffle makerI purchase this waffle maker because it makes two waffles at a time. (And no I have never made a waffle before in my life so this is all new to me, the pictures I show are experimenting how much batter I needed to use.) I read other review about other waffle makers and they all seem to have more complaints and I found it hard to choose one with a style that I liked, then I read the reviews on this one so I thought that I would give it a try because the reviews I believe where operator error and not machine error .So I received my Black and Decker waffle maker. And I love it!First of all, all of you waffle making complaining folks out there need to read the instructions!(I recommend just out of the box that you oil it, plug it in, but Don t make any waffle in the first heating of the waffle maker, you are putting oil on it and seasoning the iron.)There are many complaints about waffle machines Smoking . Well of course the machine is going to smoke, the directions call for you to first wipe down the waffle maker with oil on a paper towel. So you get the oil in all the areas, you will do this once. But doing this will give you dark golden brown crispy on the outside fluffy on the inside, and that is what we love so that is how we do it! Then you plug it in and when the light goes from red to green your ready to put the batter in. (They note in the instruction that the RED to GREEN light is NOT telling you your waffle is ready but that the temperature is ready for you to start, Black and Decker needs to work on a product that will BEEP when the waffle is ready but for now its just the temperature setting)I found 2/3 of a cup to be good, and yes this part does require a little learning curve because of the consistency of your batter. Start with pouring your batter in a circle from the outside in. You then have to Lock it and turn it over but only AFTER you wait for the count of TEN seconds. Then open the other side and pour your batter in and Lock it count to TEN seconds AGAIN and turn it back over. For this waffle maker Yes the Con is, there is no BEEP telling you when they are done (Please work on that Black and Decker) so I use the timer on my stove, for us it only cooks 3 minutes. But you need to account for the 10 seconds and flipping so I think that it is cooking for a longer period of time. But since you flipped it and fill the other side and flipped it back AFTER the 10 seconds then the one on top is the first one in and the first one out.If you are refilling the waffle maker before your light is green yes you will have under cooked waffles. But you know what they say .practice makes perfect, so all my practices goes in our tummies and the others go into our freezer for quick breakfasts during the week!I love this one so much I will buy another for my RV!Thanks Jorja 4Perfect old school waffles! - Update! We prefer our waffles not so thick, so at 1/2" and golden brown, they were perfect. Had no trouble cooking GF/DF waffles in about 5 minutes (on the higher waffle setting). It did seem to take more batter than the manual calls for. Impressed. Great price helps too. The plates swap out for griddle use (pancakes, bacon, eggs, or pressed sandwiches). That'll be next :).Update: it's been a little over a year and the waffles now stick so bad it's useless (handwashed, non stick spray/oil used). The flat side may still work but not worth keeping the whole unit for half the function. And lastly, the metal plates no longer stay in place. The clamps don't hold. 1Just like my grandmother'sSo I've had this for over a year and it's well loved and well used. I tend to use the waffle side more than the griddle plates because it's what I bought it for.Cooks evenly, no hot spots (which is surprising) obviously protect your hands and don't touch anything metal while this is on or has been recently on. It's the old fashioned kind, it's not encased in plastic, it's metal. Don't forget this or you're gonna burn yourself and blame the machine which is unfair to the machine.I've used the griddle open faced I've pressed sandwiched in it like a panini press but my favorite and predominant use is the waffle iron.I'm a kitchen gizmo person. I know I can do most things without them but why when there's a gizmo and gadget for it? More specifically though I bought this because I wanted something other than Belgian waffles and I remembered that my grandmother had a waffle iron that looked dead on this though I cannot remember if her plates were removable.Any who, my grandmother passed away a few years back and I polled my sisters trying to see if anyone remembered the brand, no one was positive but my oldest sister told me she thought it was a black and decker so I took to the Amazon.Found this beauty and immediately bought it. Second it got delivered I had it out cleaned and ready to go ( those delivery notifications are awesome. Once I knew it was out for delivery I timed it with my normal carrier's route and had the batter ingredients out and ready to roll)I would caution you to be careful about the grease you use and to have something to collect it should it get too warm and slide off the plates.I use bacon grease coz that's how I was taught and it's wonderful but obviously thin and will leak out the corner if you use the correct amount to grease the iron.I've just put it on a part of the counter I can clean super easy between batches and be done with it.Both of my sisters covet this bad boy but they're on their own. I live a few thousand miles away now so they just have to get their own. Last weekend they asked about it and it's what got me thinking its time to review this bad boy. Actually if I remember correctly I paid a bit more for it that what its pricing for now but honestly I'd do it all over again and for more.Good wafflemakers especially not Belgian waffle makers are hard to come by.Don't get me wrong I ALSO have a Belgian wafflemaker but this, this is what trotted out on my counter every couple of weekends. 5Cooks OLD style regular waffels to perfection!Cooks well and cleanly. However, be mindful that you need to allow just a little bit of time between taking out the fresh cooked waffle and putting in new batter to cook. If you start the process too quickly, you can get an undone center and the outsides will be done as intended. Also I found that when it cools down I can wrap the cord around the bottom half and put the cord in that small groove and lock it in with the plug in on the other side. I use a large pan under it to catch any overage-spill from baking. I have put too much batter in and had it ooze out the sides and drip onto that pan. It breaks right off from the waffle iron when done, and I can easily clean up the drip on the pan underneath. Use aluminum foil and merely dispose of the foil when done. I used NO spray, but relied on the oil I have in my waffle recipe (home style recipe). I wish there were a cross-element of coiled heating wire to get the centers of the grill more even, rather than the solid heating element. However, this type of element will be a lot harder to damage or burn out later on. 5Does the job, oil the irons between waffles to save yourself a lot of clean-upI really, REALLY wanted the $200 version of this waffle iron (in another brand, alas) but since we are a family of 4 and only make waffles once or twice a month, this seemed the smarter option. Here's my 3 month, approximately 50-waffle assessment of this purchase.Pros:* relatively cheap* can cook 2 sets of waffles within 6-8 minutes (good for families with kids who want their freakin' waffles already!)* pretty even bake on all parts of the waffle (both sides)* can make soft waffles or crisp waffles depending on recipe & cooking time* easy clean-up IF YOU BRUSH CANOLA OIL ON IRON BETWEEN WAFFLE JOBS* handy drip tray really does collect 95% of drips* exterior of the unit cleans up easily, even if it is essentially coated in batter (that was a rough morning)Cons:* batter/waffle sticks to the iron... I have tried 5 different recipes with this iron, including a gluten-free version, and ALL of them stuck to the iron unless I brushed canola oil on it between waffles* no way to tell if the waffle is cooked to perfection: yes, I read other reviews indicating that when it stops steaming it is done, but that doesn't tell me if it is barely cooked, lightly browned or hard as a rock* if you make the mistake of listening to the manufacturer's instructions and applying batter to the iron without canola oil, clean up is a major headache* drip tray only handles small drips: larger decision-making failures that come with multitasking 2 waffles at once--i.e., dumping way too much batter on the iron--will result in a mess all over the iron, drip tray, and counter top.... it would be nice if they could make a drip tray that fits under the whole unit* takes up a lot of storage spaceAll in all, I am glad I did not buy the more expensive version of this waffle maker. It does what it is supposed to do, and if you pay attention to cooking time and keep the irons oiled, it'll make some darn good waffles.Solid 4 star purchase. 4
