Great coffee, poor design.I had a Bodum press previously for times when I needed a quick cup and didn't want to do a whole pot of coffee in the coffee maker. One day when I cleaned the coffee maker I found so much gunk in it I knew I could never use a drip machine again. GROSS!So I made the break and went 100% press and never looked back. The coffee is better and a little extra cleanup day to day over the horrors that lay inside the guts of a drip machine made it no contest. But I needed a bigger press and this was one of only a couple from Bodum that fit the bill in being able to fill my carafe and get a cup out right now.Unfortunately after several months use I have discovered it has a major design flaw that has really bummed me out on this purchase. Namely the handle. The handle is designed to not need screws or rivets as it pops together and is held together by tension of the metal cage that holds the glass chamber. Over time it seems something has warped and it keep swinging loose at the bottom which can be a bit scary as it ONLY does it when its full of boiling hot water!! Had this problem surfaced earlier I would have returned it and looked at a different model or brand. It is sad as it really fits my needs and works in all other ways exactly as I want it and it makes great coffee but this makes it feel like kind of a chintzy item. It's a real shame. 1Lovely form with decent functionBuy the color that fits your kitchen. This copper one is lovely and a joy to see in the mornings. I wish it was more of a joy to use. The plunging mechanism tends to be wobbly, sometimes going down unevenly unless I steady the metallic base with my other hand. After four different types of coarsely ground beans, it rarely seems to plunge as smoothly as in the video. The coffee can be delicious, if you take the time to experiment with the beans, grind, water temperature, and ratio of grind to water. Follow the directions on the package of beans. Even small deviations in the ratio make a huge difference in flavor.Cleaning after each brew definitely helps to get the best flavor of coffee. Cleaning is relatively simple, but I have caught my fingers on the metal mesh from time to time. I've gotten pretty quick at dismantling and reassembling it. I'm very happy to not constantly dispose and buy filters.Overall, I would buy it again though I wish it worked as smoothly as it looks. 4Perfect size and great designI had another French Press but decided to upgrade to this one for a few reasons. I was looking for a smaller size since I only ever make coffee for myself in the mornings and don't need an 8-cup size and I also wanted a stainless steel filter and the ability to clean everything in the dishwasher. Things I noticed right away after receiving this item are first and foremost that this is a sturdy well-made press. The filters feel strong and the top part is pretty substantial in terms of size. Because I got the 17 oz, I will say that the wideness of the press is unusual and I was a bit taken aback by how this particular wide design made the filter feel as it plunges. At first, I honestly thought there was a design flaw since the plunger didn't depress as easily as other presses I have had in the past. However, after using it to make coffee a few times now, it works flawlessly and I appreciate the extra resistance while plunging.Coffee made with this has been glorious and I can't speak highly enough about the size of the 17 oz if you, like me, have been looking for a smaller press which will make 1 huge mug of coffee (or 2 small mugs). 5Bodum Chambord Three cup French Press for one personI have the larger version of this French Press and have used it for many years without issue. Using a French Press is one part science, one part cooking and three parts magic/luck. Once you figure out your settings you are in coffee nirvana land. Since I rarely have the need for 33 ounces of the nectar of the gods I decided to get the three person version.Delivery was as promised and even with the delivery person dropping the box in the driveway the product was received unscathed. It was exactly as described. This is a small French Press. The directions specify not to fill beyond one inch from the top which is where the top part of the upper metal band is, a good visual reference. I measured out 12 ounces to see how much this version of French Press really holds. Twelve ounces comes right to the top of the metal band, about one inch from the top. Ahh, but there is a rub here as Archimedes discovered during his bath. If you put 3 scoops of coffee into the device you can't possibly fit twelve ounces of water due to that whole displacement thing. Three scoops was too strong for me so I used two. I boiled a pot of water in the Ovente electric kettle. Letting it sit until it came off the boil I measured out 12 ounces and poured it into the Bodum. Mixing the grounds gently with a plastic spoon I then put the top on and let it sit for 4 minutes. Then I began the final step of the extraction process. Slowly and gently I pressed my palm into the firm roundness of the plunger. The slightest resistance noted, I pushed on, gently. Finally I reached the limit when I could push no more. I noted the creamy liquid forming on the top of the coffee. I rotated the lid and poured the hot, steaming beverage into the measuring cup. Ten ounces. I'm ok with that. No grounds or sediment was noted. I used Cape May Roasters coarse ground Lighthouse blend. Delicious.See photo. Regular coffee cup, Keurig and bag of coffee in picture for size reference.Note: I found that if you let it steep too long the coffee will begin to taste bitter, like re-heated, four hour on the burner coffee. Pay attention when you are steeping the grounds.Cleanup was simple. I used a plastic spoon to clean the grounds out and rinsed what was left into the disposal. Cleaning the grounds from the filter was simple.Definitely worth the purchase if you are looking for a one cup coffee maker. 5Too much wasteI bought this French Press to replace the one that hit the floor last week. Unlike my old one, the press does not go down as far as needed. it stops before all the liquid is pressed out of the grounds. It's then very difficult to get the liquid out from under the mesh. This might be fine for someone who always brews a full pot, but I often just brew half a pot and I object to the waste. If I want a 16oz cup of Crio Bru, I need to add more water, and thus more grounds - adding to waste and expense.I'm sure it is fine for coffee, but for Crio Bru Ecuador Light Roast - Coca River Organic Herbal Tea Coffee Alternative Substitute 99% Caffeine Free Whole-30 Gluten Free Honest Low Calorie Energy Boost (10oz) I suggest using an insulated press as the brew cools down far too much in the 10 min of steeping time. 1Great french press BUT 6 months later....NOTWe love this elegant style press BUT discouraged about the quality of the glass carafe. Always careful with it and never exposing the glass to sudden temperature...nevertheless, 6 months of limited use and the top rim of the carafe "fell" out. Cheap quality on this carafe and seemed to be built for obsolescence which requires REPLACEMENT and another $25 on the sale. Nice going guys. 1Best tasting coffee! I m hooked!Loving my Bodum coffee press! I wish I would have found it sooner. Makes great coffee with no sediment. We have gotten rid of our drip coffee maker and only use our coffee presses and a pour over ( for the husband).I don't understand other reviewers problems with the thickness or lack there of, of the glass carafe/ beaker. It doesn t seem overly thin. It is borosilicate Glass made to withstand the high heat of the water and daily usage. If it were thicker it would break too easily.Clean up is a breeze. I add just a bit of water to the carafe after I remove it from the frame and pour into a strainer over the sink. Rinse with water and then dispose of the grounds in the garbage. Then wash by hand, remove and wash plunger ( screen, coil press, etc), dry all pieces except screen and put back together. Takes about 3 minutes or so. Ready for next use. And looks so pretty on the counter and while brewing. 5Great French press - if you re making coffee for antsWe ordered this French press specifically because it s listed as a 3 cup capacity. There is no way that anyone can call this capacity 3 cups. It s too bad, because the quality seems top notch. Easy to use, and we had 0 coffee grounds in the one mug we made. Just not large enough for our needs. Will return for something larger. 1Plastic filter with Cancer warningShattered my old French press after 2 good long years and needed a replacement. I like the eco friendly aspects of presses and this one looked great. However, the description never mentioned the large plastic filter your coffee has to be poured through. There is, however, a California Proposition 65 cancer warning that I see now after looking closer and I m sure this is because of the plastic filter. FYI plastic is not safe even when it s BPA free , especially when you re pouring hot liquid through it every day. There s no way to remove the plastic filter so I m returning it. 1Exceeded all expectations, but 16 oz not 32 ozEverything about this coffee maker met or exceeded my expectations. (With one caveat, at the end of the review.)I'd heard that all French Presses deposit a very small amount of coffee grounds in your coffee. Everyone said it was a small trade-off for the best cup of coffee you can easily make at home. One even said those grounds were a "badge of honor."Well, I've been using my Bodum for weeks now and am yet to notice a single coffee ground in my coffee. Perhaps the plunger's filter mesh will deform slightly, someday, if I drop it on the floor? For now, though, the edges of plunger perfectly match up with the glass. It really is the best coffee I've ever had. I love this thing. My advice: buy good coffee. Know your beans, and make sure it's ground very coarse (specifically for a French Press). Find a local roaster and buy it direct. Now, the caveat: this thing does not provide "four cups" in the American sense of the word "cup". It holds about 16 ounces. That's two cups. I believe they call this a four-cup press because it holds four demitasse, which is much closer to a half-cup.If you like a big cup of coffee in the morning, or are filling up an insulated travel mug, then this Bodun will make enough for just one person at a time. Again, sixteen ounces. It's approximately one Starbucks Grande or a little more than one Dunkin Donuts medium. 5
