I always rely on thermometers and this is the best one I've used by far!I always rely on thermometers and this is the best one I've used by far!*Large, glow-in-the-dark dial that makes it easy to see in the oven*Long spike for reading*You can move the outer black marking to the food you are cooking so it is easy to see when the food is at the right temperature.*Don't forget to calibrate with a simple boil test before using. And it is great to be able to recalibrate to always make sure your temperature reading is correct.Highly recommended!I hope that you have found my opinion to be helpful with your decision process to purchase this item. If this is the case, and where Amazon asks if this review helpful, please click "yes". 5Nice Thermometer After You Calibate It.I like the fact that this thermometer is oven/grill safe and has a glass lens. However, I quickly found that, out of the package, it is not very accurate. Since I bought two different models of this style thermometer, I once inserted both into a piece of meat and had a 30 degree variation. That is not good.I was getting ready to ask for a refund when I noticed a marking on the face of the thermometer scale that said "Boil Test". The light bulb went on.I set a pot of water on the stove to boil then placed the thermometer in the boiling water. The pointer came up well short of the "Boil Test" point. Using a small wrench or pliers to hold the hex nut on the back side of the dial, I slowly twisted the head of the thermometer until the needle aligned with the "Boil Test". I rechecked in boiling water to confirm and I was done. Now, the thermometer works exceptionally well and is very accurate against my electronic thermometer. Wish this set up information had been plastered across the front of the package in large letters. 3Great Thermometer! Calibrate before first use!!! Instructions in my description.I'm seeing a lot of complaint on this thermometer because it does not ship calibrated. This is so easy to calibrate, tools needed, small pot to boil water, small wrench that fits the hex nut under the face or a pair of pliers.Boil the water in the pot you want a hard boil not just a few small bubbles, then hold the pointy end of the thermometer into the boiling water, once the temperature indicator stops moving use the small wrench or pliers to turn the small hex shaped piece under the face until the temperature indicator is pointing at 'Boil Test' on the face. Easy. This thing works great once that's done. 5Very slow and temperature way offNot even close to accurate. Reads about 15-20F degrees low. Used it in oven for a turkey and seemed strange that temperature reading said bird was no where near done, but time and appearance said otherwise, so swapped thermometer out with my old one that's not oven safe to get an instant reading and it was already at 175+ dry and overcooked. Tried it again to get an instant read while grilling chicken (not leaving it in the grill) still same result very very slow and about 15 degrees off. Junk. 1Large easy to read dial and able to be calibratedI bought the CDN IRM200 ProAccurate Meat/Poultry Oven Thermometer with the Extra Large Glow-in-the-Dark Dial. This has a large, easy to read dial that even I can see with my visually impaired eyes (I'm nowhere near blind - just need increasing prescriptions each year for my vision). It seems very sturdy and well-made, and I like that it's ovenproof and dishwasher safe. This is the type of thermometer that can be left in the meat while cooking, which I prefer, as opposed to the instant read type that can not be left in the oven. It can also be put on a shelf of the oven, rather than in meat, to check if your oven is heating to the correct temperature as well (not to be used under the broiler, though). An important feature is the small hex nut on the back so it can be calibrated for accuracy, so you'll know it's reading correctly. I only just recently learned about calibrating thermometers, and it took me at least 10 tries before I got it right. I found it helpful to move the outside temperature target indicator dial to where it says "boil test" on the thermometer and use it as a visual when turning the nut left or right. I immersed the tip of the thermometer about an inch or two in a pot of boiling water using tongs (be careful not to touch the bottom or sides) and if it went over the boil test I adjusted the hex nut to the right or clockwise, if it went too low I adjusted the nut to the left or counterclockwise. These are miniscule turns, turn it too much and it will go too far. Overall, a great buy! 5FAST temperature reading so you can tell when your meat is cooked the way you wantI ruined my last meat thermometer because I didn't notice that it was not made to be left in the meat while roasting, so it melted. This one is very durable, and it "reads" so much faster than the two digital thermometers I got at the grocery store--and big enough to easily see too. Also, the point is very sharp and goes right into the meat easily with no pushing. I love it. 5A pleasure to useTime of ownership: One year and three months.I have had many meat thermometers before, and they all broke. I especially recommend against most inexpensive digital ones because they electrical circuits are quite fragile and easily break, and they are never dishwasher safe. This is the only one that has lasted me over a year.It is hard to find a thermometer that says it is dishwasher safe. Additional features are that it is large with relatively easy-to-read numbers and it can be re-calibrated using a boil test. I have used on average once weekly, and it has served me well. 5Calibrate the damned thingThank you to everyone who wrote reviews, because you told me how to calibrate the damned thing. CDN was no help. Stated on the label: recalibration instructions are available at CDNkitchen.com. I beg to differ. The statement also implies that the thermometer has been calibrated. It seems they are not.Should you take the recommended step of calibrating, remember to place your wrench on the calibration nut before the thermometer goes in the water. You must calibrate the thermometer at temperature. If you use a microwave oven, you should know that you can superheat water. It can actually get up past 212 F. So wait about 15 seconds for the water to reach a normal boiling point, or just do it the old-fashioned way and boil it on the stove.A version of this simple device has been in my family for generations, in all likelihood uncalibrated. I wonder how many millions of women were taking inaccurate measurements all this time. I don t recall similar thermometers bearing a boil test marking. Progress. The thermometer is designed to measure a meat temperature range. Not much good for calibrating in an oven set at 350 nor with a glass of ice water.Hey with all this boiled water sitting around I might as well cook. 4I really like this thermometer!I really like this thermometer! The temperatures and dial really stand out and are much more readable than our old meat thermometers. First, it passed the "boil" test; it was spot on. Next, we used it on a roast and pulled it out at 142 degrees; the meat came medium-rare, just as we wanted it. It appears accurate! As a result, we threw out the old thermometers out, which gave us some more room in our drawer. Life is good and the Universe is now in balance! 5Junk unfortunately, no precision. Exploded in the ovenSeems like a very useful tool so far. I like the big format (nice to be able to look in the oven without fogged up glasses). I like the movable setting indicator, making it even easier to see if your food is done.10/18/15 update: After using this item for a few months, it still seems to work well, but the glass has become partially fogged and the numbers have faded in color to obscurity. The arrow itself has retained it's original color brightness, but not the numbers. I can still use it by comparing the arrow to the hand setting for the temperature goal, but I originally purchased this thermometer for its overall high visibility, so I'm removing a couple of stars.UPDATE: 7/24/17 - I bought a new one of these after frustration of no longer being able to read the dial. The new one again looks great, but is very inaccurate. Standardizing it to boiling temp may actually make it worse. I now have to use both the old and the new, and find the old more reliable, though I never standardized it. Even if I standardize them to each other (adjusting in the middle of the range rather than at the extreme for boiling water), the new one will not maintain a repeatable reading. Can't recommend. I'm going to a different brand.9/7/19 - update: Thermometer exploded in the oven. Stay away. Removing a star. 1
