Very inconsistent grind and forget a fine grind for either pepper or saltThese grinders are not what I expected. I have both set for the finest grind. It doesn't matter. The salt more or less pours out heavy. The pepper grind is nowhere close to fine. The grind consists of big chunks and medium chunks with a sprinkling of fine grind here and there. The setting dial really doesn't matter. It goes from a loose grind to a really loose grind with each setting giving you a mixture of chunks, not a consistent grind. The problem seems to be that the finest setting doesn't pull the grinder wheel close enough to the disk to give a good fine grind. You can see in the photo there is a big gap at the finest setting. If you prefer a mix of big chunks and a heavy salt pour, then this is the grinder set for you. 1EXACTLY WHAT I'VE BEEN SEARCHING FOR!!!I have been looking for an easy to fill pepper grinder for quite a while. We prefer fresh ground pepper but filling the grinder is something I dread doing. I have tried a funnel, I've tried a paper funnel. I get the same results, peppercorns bouncing into the sink, on to the counter, on to the floor. UGH! In fact to avoid re-filling the grinder I actually bought a 2nd grinder and waited until both were empty before I'd fill 'em. I saw these on Amazon and thought okay it says it has a wider area to fill, what the heck. I am DELIGHTED!!!!! I find they are a very attractive set and since the grinder is at the top there are no "crumbs" or residue and yes it is easy to fill! I like the easy to read grind selection (fine to course). I'm glad Amazon had this item and that I made the purchase. I was NOT paid to write this review nor did I receive a discount. I just really like the product. 5Perfect grindersWe've had these for a couple of months and use them daily, many days they are used several times. We love that the grinder is on the top - no messes on the counter or table. We love the grinder adjustment - easy and works well. Don't expect the grinder to get the salt or pepper super fine, but if you want that just use the pre-ground stuff in a regular shaker. For us, the grind is plenty fine enough from these. Using these is also easy - it doesn't take much to turn them - even one of our mothers who has bad arthritis in her hands can use them without trouble. Being able to see how much is inside is handy - can keep them filled and never run out right at dinner. And refilling is super easy as well. We had one instance in which the salt came out of the bottom because the screw/plug came off. However, we realized that one person was holding the grinder in such a way that they gripped not only the part that turns/grinds but also gripped the screw/plug for the salt container. Since discovering that, we've had no more issues with salt or pepper coming out. (the rest of us don't even turn/grip the grinder that way, and the person who did doesn't anymore)So, I feel silly writing so much about a fairly inexpensive salt/pepper grinder but really these are superb. 5Sturdy, but fataly flawedAfter almost five years of use, these are still going strong. That's the only reason that I haven't trashed and replaced them until now. The pepper grinder will adjust the overall coarseness of the grind, but any sort of uniformity is sadly lacking. The salt grinder seems to have only one setting, extra fine, regardless of the coarseness of the original. The only reason that I give it more than a one star rating is its stubborn resistance to breaking. 3Just buy these immediately and stop looking. There is no other comparable in size, function, stability and fashion versatilitySeriously, I'm not kidding. Just stop looking and buy these.I am SO tired of containers that are too small. These containers will last about 6 months of daily use because of their capacity.I'm SO tired of tall pepper shakers that won't stand up. These are not top-heavy and stand firmly on their base and don't tip over.I'm SO tired of grinders that suck. These don't. They grind & give you a choice from their version of fine to coarse, in 5-increments which are obviously adjustable for every user.I'm SO tired of grinders that look like crap on your table. These don't. Stainless, clear & black looks great with most decor, and none of it shows fingerprints (because your hands are, by design, all over these things).I'm COMPLETELY tired of shakers that make a mess when refilling. These don't. Everything is easy and you just pour in your pepper and salt without an issue, without leaking, without a mess, and without any confusion. There is no mechanical confusion here on how to make it all work. They just work and keep on working. These are nothing less than amazing. My girlfriend has had them for 2 years. I have had them in my camping kit for 2 years and they're still going strong after roughing it outdoors in rain and all-things camping.I bought these just a month ago and I can't believe I waited this long.Buy 'em. You'll not be at all disappointed...Be well. Stay centered... 5it fell apartI had the same problem that other users have reported. I've only used the pepper grinder for just a couple months, and today the lid popped off and sprayed pepper everywhere. Reassembling it looks difficult or impossible, as miscellaneous grinder-parts (springs, washers) are now mixed in with the remaining pepper. 1Manufacturing defect? GREAT customer service!Originally I was very disappointed in these grinders, but read on...You fill these grinders through a screw-off cap on the bottom. The salt grinder's cap never fully screwed correctly, but I thought it was okay. Today the cap fell off when I picked it up and spilled salt into my food. I messed with the cap, switched the salt and pepper caps, and decided that the salt grinder itself had a manufacturing flaw in it such that neither cap would screw down tight on it.I threw them both away and switched back to my spiceratchet.com grinders that I bought at Whole Foods. Bummer.UPDATE: Based on other reviews I read here, I emailed oxo about this. They promptly sent me a replacement set, along with a hand-written apology card. The new ones do not have the defect. Now that is GREAT customer service! 3Just OKI have had this OXO grinder set for quite a while. It works fine and looks fine too. The grinders are big enough, so you don't have to fill them out often. But I have some issues with the set:a) I use the smallest settings on each. Pepper is fine, but salt is still too coarse for my liking.b) The amount of ground pepper coming out is very small, so you have to crank a lot, whereas ground salt comes out too fast.c) they are plastic in the middle, not glass. One of them was already burnt on the side by my hot griddle. So, be mindful where you leave them. 3These are the grinders you're looking for!I searched all over the internet for these! I wanted matching salt & pepper grinders that were well constructed and the grinding mechanisms wouldn't break easily And they couldn't be too tall so they wouldn't fall over easily And they wouldn't leave remnants behind when you were finished using them And they looked nice And not too terribly expensive I've read the reviews on these and people have said they're too coarsely ground, not true. They have variable coarseness and they each work beautifully. Stop your searching and purchase these! 5It seems impossible to find a really good salt and pepper grinder set at a reasonable priceIt seems impossible to find a really good salt and pepper grinder set at a reasonable price. Since the reviews here were mostly positive, I was hopeful this set would be the one, but it's not. I've now had the set for six weeks and here's my opinion. The size is nice, it's easy to fill and the grinders look fairly good. But the drawbacks outweigh the pluses. These grinders are supposed to be adjustable so you can set your desired coarseness of the salt and pepper. But there is hardly any difference between the size of the grains that come out whether the grinders are on their finest or coarsest setting. I don't know why OXO bothered -- selling gimmick maybe. Also, it seems hard to get the pepper started grinding at times -- you have to shake the grinder and tap it on the counter to get the peppercorns to get into the grinding mechanism. And finally, the grinding mechanism on the salt seems to get gummed up a lot. I don't know if it attracts and holds moisture or what but I seem to be wiping around the grinding mechanism fairly regularly to clean out the salt that's gotten clogged in it. I have only ground Himalayan salt in mine. I wouldn't purchase these again. 2
