  • EFFORTLESS CUTTING - The ratchet in the pruner is a clever extra mechanism to make light work of tough cuts. As you squeeze ratcheting pruning shears, they latch so you can release and squeeze again, performing the cut in easy steps rather than one go. As you cut through a branch, the ratcheting mechanism clicks and moves to the next setting, providing ever-increasing pressure as you cut.
  • 5 TIMES THE POWER - The ratcheting mechanism's settings multiply your hand's power by up to 5 times, so that you don't have to do the work - the pruning shears do it for you. With
  • HIGH QUALITY HARDENED STEEL BLADES - Heat treated and hardened carbon steel blades are ultra strong, will last longer and are less likely to nick or need frequent sharpening. Coated with non-stick Teflon that resists sap and other sticky materials.
  • ERGONOMIC COMFORTABLE DESIGN - If you intend to prune frequently, you'll appreciate the way that a ratchet pruner will reduce wrist strain, require less pressure to cut, and generally make the pruning experience much more enjoyable. If you do a lot of pruning, this can make a huge difference in hand fatigue. Ideal if you are already starting out at a disadvantage with carpal tunnel or arthritis, or have smaller hands.

Customer Reviews

Had loved it. But ratchet pin just broke 15 months after I bought it while snow still on the ground. I'm not satisfied!I loved using this. But it wasn't cheap! And there isn't much of a growing season here in Minnesota. With all the positive reviews I expected to get more than a summer and one quarter use out of it. But the pin that slides inside the ratchet broke and is gone. It's now useless. That certainly doesn't leave me a Satisfied Customer when I haven't gotten my money's worth of use yet. And I can't find a customer service contact number for Gardenite. So I am very disappointed in the purchase at this stage, and I can't give it more than a one star rating. 1Awesome Advance in Pruning ToolsI've had my own landscape business for 36 years, have been in the industry for 45 years and have always sworn by Felco #2 pruners whose accurate stance is that they'll cut through any wood that you are strong enough to power through. But I just had hand restoration surgery and am now looking at tools that do more of the work for me...and these pruners fit that bill very nicely. They're compact so they'll fit in a standard holster ( like Felco's own) and cut amazingly well. They're well made and my gut reaction is that I'll being using them for a long time...but of course I'll keep the Felco's side by side for lighter duty work. Two thumbs up!!! 5Update May 2016I am a master gardener/landscaper by trade and have two ratchet pruners used for work. What I needed was a pair to keep at my mother's to use when working in her yard. These looked like they would be comparable to those I already use and available for a good price, so I ordered them. The slide lock button is a bit stiff and difficult to close without using both hands. The ratchet is smooth, cuts clean and fits nicely in my back pocket. They work great as one stroke cutting for simple tasks like dead heading flowers, rose bushes etc then switch to the ratchet for thicker cuts. I have used them for pruning thin azalea branches, thicker tree branches and even to remove thick invasive poison ivy growing into the tree bark.A ratchet pruner is much easier on the wrist and hands. It also makes any pruning job finish much quicker.****Update May 2016***Changing my ratingAfter barely using these for two months, the sliding release lever broke. From the beginning the lever was continually sticking. It was bothersome but thought I could ignore the inconvenience. Even though there is a screw in the middle of the sliding release lever, it does nothing but attach the plastic lever to the pruner. Today, while sliding the lever to open the pruner, the button snapped and fell off! Now there is no way to close the pruner when not in use. Not much use or value in this product! 1Great clippersI have used these for two years now; I have used them for clipping off thorned and fibrous Robellini palm fronds to fat banana palm frond stems to general shrub trimming. I have arthritis in my hands and love the ratchet mechanism which still works well and gives my grip a lot of extra strength. I give it four stars rather than five because sometimes when the shears is held downward, the lock mechanism tends to slide forward and lock the blades when you want them to open for a cut. Then you have to slide the lock mechanism back to make it operational again. It would be great if these had a more foamy grip material for greater comfort and a more textured surface for more surface "grab" so the shears slip out of the hand less easily. The green grip material on the grips is not very spongy and it's smooth therefore the shears fall out of the hand more easily. Other than that these are one tough, quality pair of shears. 4Easy to use, lightweight, comfortable and durable. Excellent pruners.Try em you ll like em and even if you don t you can get your money back without a hassle..This is my third pair of Gardenite Ratchet Pruners. I bought these as a gift for my next door neighbor who is as much an avid gardener as I.A few days age, we were working in our side yards near each other. He was having a struggle with an old pair of bypass pruners which pinched his hand every few minutes. So after several minutes of listening to him mutter and utter louder expletives I walked over and handed him my gardenite pruners and told him to give them a try. After a minute or two he said Wow! These are really great Where did you get them?" We worked in that area for another hour or so along with the mutters and expletives from the old bypass prunes. I came back to my house, went straight to my computer and ordered a pair of Gardenite pruners from Amazon, chose same day delivery and received them shortly before 9 PM that evening. He is a delighted with them as I have been.I spend 3-6 hours a day in my garden, here at the edge of the Texas hill country, most months of the year.Like most other gardeners, I ve gone through many pairs of pruners but have never been truly satisfied with any of them, except for the Gardenite. The blade seems to be made from good steel. It was very sharp when they arrived and stayed sharp a long time. The few times I ve sharpened them they took a good edge and held it for at least a couple of months. The ratcheting feature allows you to cut through a much thicker (up to about an inch in my case) than is possible with other hand pruners I ve had. From my experience, I have absolutely no qualms in giving them 5 stars. 5Simply UselessI was excited to get this pruner which had lots of good reviews. It arrived today. At first glance I noticed beads of some substance on the blade - it appeared dirty. Was it used? Who knows. The real issue was I could not OPEN the darn thing - I am no weaking, but after 15 minutes of trying, and a sore palm (even though I used a towel and then a potholder to cushion) I gave up. This can't be the same product people reviewed. It is truly awful and I am returning it for a refund. I will get another brand locally. Have never had a pruner that was impossible to open and use. What a waste of 10 days. 1These are awesome, and very sharpThese are awesome, and very sharp. I pruned three year old suckers off my dad's old olive trees that were up to an inch an a half thick in one afternoon without hurting my hand or getting a blister. Albeit I am younger and pretty strong, I had a really easy time using these on all but the inch thick and over suckers. I truly enjoy the ease of pruning my young stone fruit trees and grape vines with these and my two inch thick succulent branches (I have a really old succulent plant that belonged to my great grandparents in the thirties) were subdued easily by these shears. The cost makes me vigilant to clean and save these from the elements, I absolutely feel these should be kept out of reach of children. They could take off a hand, let alone a finger. These are great and comfortable to hold in size medium hands and the ratchet action works very well with not a ton of strain.I put a leather lanyard on these and use a thick rubber band to act as a second line of safety to keep it as safe as possible.I would recommend these to anyone.I threw away my junky shears with a smile once these proved themselves on olive tree maintenance day. No way could they have done that job! 5If Hubby Loves This, it Must Be Good! These are probably the best "ratchet" pruning shears we've every bought, and we've bought maybe 10 pairs in our 50 years of gardening. These cost a little more but are worth every penny. I hope they last for many years because we love them! They have cut thicker branches (up to 1 1/2" around) than we've been able to cut with others. My husband loves them too, so I'm a happy puppy!I review hundreds of products I buy on Amazon and rely on reviews from others a lot too to make my purchase decisions. I only rate an item 5 stars if I would pay full price for it or be willing to give it as a gift. I do give 1 star (since you can't give 0) to items which are so bad that I throw away, return for refund or wouldn't want even if free. I try to mention all the pros and cons of products. I have no affiliation with this company or any company for products I review, and my reviews are always totally my own (including any photos/videos). I hope my time spent reviewing this item helped in your decision. If it did, please vote "yes" below! Thanks! 5> THEY REALLY WORK !!!UPDDATE -- After about a year of use, Power Drive Pruning Shears have become my favorite pruning shears. The first several times you use Power Drive Pruning Shears pruning shears, the action seems a bit awkward and "tricky". It takes perhaps 4 or 5 afternoons of use before muscle memory takes over, and suddenly they become as easy to use as simple pruning shears, with the benefit that you can cut branches twice as thick.ORIGINAL REVIEW> I found that I can cut 3/4" thick branches fairly easily.> They should be particularly useful for folks who (because of arthritis or some other condition) do not have a strong grip. But, short 15" loppers, such as Fiskars 15 Inch PowerGear Super Pruner/Lopper (7972), may be even easier for individuals with weak grips---or may simply be less tiring if you have alot of pruning to do.> You have the option of cutting with 1, 2, or 3 squeezes, but it takes practice and concentration.> I still have a strong grip, and therefore prefer simple pruners such as Fiskars Traditional Bypass Pruning Shears for most pruning tasks. But sometimes it is nice to have the option to cut a thicker branch, instead of going back to the tool shed for the big loppers.PRUNERS vs LOPPERS> Normally, pruners are best for stems and branches up to " diameter, and loppers are best for branches greater than " diameter. In between, other consideration come into play.> Pruners are used 1-handed, loppers are used 2-handed. If you need to hold a stem or branch while you cut, or you want to collect the cut stems as you work, a pruner is your best choice. Loppers are less tiring if you are cutting alot of thick stems, particularly if you have a weak grip for some reason. Loppers (particularly extendable handle loppers) give you far more reach, so that you don t have to bend over, or resort to a ladder. The reach can also help protect you from the thorns of roses, etc.OTHER OPTIONS: Unless you have a specific reason to choose another design/option, I recommend choosing simple bypass pruners, at least for your first and most-used pruner.. The choices are more complex for loppers.BYPASS vs ANVIL: Bypass pruners are analogous to scissors, with two blades which move past one another. Anvil pruners are analogous to a cleaver and cutting board, with 1 blade and an anvil to which the blade cuts. Bypass pruners usually cut more cleanly with less crushing, which is usually better for the plant. Anvil loppers may not easily cut completely through very fibrous stems. Power Drive pruners are bypass.SIMPLE vs COMPOUND, GEARED, or RACHET: Geared, compound, and ratchet designs give you more leverage, but that usually is NOT desirable in pruning shears but either requiring you to open the shears wider, or to squeeze them multiple times to cut through a stem. For small or easily-cut stems, simple pruning shears are easier and less tiring to use. Power Drive pruners are a ratchet design.Click on Stoney just below the product title to see my reviews of loppers for details on how to choose among lopper designs. 4Good Shears, Ratcheting Function InconsistentBought these shears because the ones at my place of employment were likely built sometime in the 1700's and are basically useless. Over the last few weeks, I've been given the task of pruning several yew bushes that were left to grow unchecked, likely for years. Safe to say, they have grown to over 8 feet tall and had a lot of dead branches. After the first week of using the old pruners, I made the choice to purchase my own. In come these ratcheting shears which I never even knew existed until I found them here on Amazon. On day one of receiving them, I couldn't believe how easy it made my job compared to the old shears. I whipped through dead branches with one hand and the ratchet function that would have taken two hands and a lot of squeezing to cut through with the old ones. Many reviewers mentioned how easy it was to cut through branches which I'm inclined to agree with. The blade of these shears is very sharp, and still is after three straight days of pruning. They worked on dead branches I wouldn't have even considered trying with the old shears, and nipped even the tiniest of branches with ease. I was (and still am) impressed with how well they work(ed). However, while these shears are indeed impressive, they didn't come without their flaws. On day one of using them, I noticed the occasional slippage of the ratcheting function, especially when cutting thicker branches. I'd feel a pop, then the ratchet would engage. No big deal, it didn't slow me down but I did note it was happening. On day two, the slippage started to get more frequent and occasionally, the ratchet function would fail and I'd have to jiggle the handle a number of times to get it to engage again. Day three, the problems got progressively worse. The slippage became more frequent, the ratcheting function was failing more frequently and this time, jiggling the handle like I had been doing the day before wasn't working. There were times where I would cut most of the way through a branch only to have the shears get stuck. No amount of squeezing or jiggling of the handle would engage the ratchet function and get me through that last bit of branch. When that happened, it forced me to pull the shears out of the branch and try to cut through the rest of it a second time. For the most part, these shears have made my job 100 times easier and far more efficient. I'd give them a 3.5 star rating if Amazon would allow for it. Some reviewers mentioned having to get used to the ratcheting function which for me, took all of about 30 seconds and I happily went to town on those dead branches. In three days time, these shears got a lot of use. Perhaps they're not designed for the amount of work I put them through and would be better suited for the occasional pruning job around the home. The slipping and failure of the ratchet engaging didn't happen all the time but with increasing frequency, it can't be ignored. I see the seller is very responsive to their reviewers and have already reached out to them about an exchange or refund. I look forward to hearing from them and will update this review accordingly when I do. 3
