Oh for the love of sharpness! Why did I wait so long to get an electric knife sharpener? I have no idea. I only wish I had done it sooner. Many years ago I indulgently bought my wife a full set of very nice, very sharp, kitchen knives. Over the year, live has taken a toll on the blades. I occasionally honed the knives on the handheld honer (is that a word?) that came in the block with the knives. What I didn't know is that it was not actually sharpening them. It is intended to kind of reinforce the sharp edge before every use. Needless to say, our knives have been essentially useless for quite some time. It was so bad it almost didn't matter which side of the blade you used to attempt to slice your food, because neither side worked. I finally bought this as a last ditch effort before buying a new knife set. I am extremely happy with the edge this device has put on our knives. It's like they are brand new again! Some of our knives had been badly abused by our kids, being used to pry things open, or used to cut things other than food, and those particular blades took a extra time in the sharpener to get a nice edge on them. But, I was able to put an almost scary edge on all of our knives! I highly recommend this little (and it is smaller than the pictures implied) tool. 5Maybe works too goodI was going to just buy a new 7" Henckels Santoku knife because I had used mine and sharpened it with cheap gadgets for years and it had finally given out on me. It couldn't slice through a tomato no matter what I did. For some reason I decided to look for an electric sharpener instead and came across this one and read the reviews and was convinced to at least try it and I'm glad I did. This is a legit sharpener that doesn't mess around, I took my knife through the entire process twice and now it slices through paper like it's air. I had forgotten how easily and thinly you should be able to slice garlic cloves! My knife is an absolute dream again!I did notice like another reviewer said that it scratched my knife, but I'll just be a little more careful during the next sharpening to try and hold it steadier. My knives are work horses, not show ponies, so I'm not too troubled by it, but it is something to be aware of if you're the type to display your knives. The one thing that I would warn on is that I have found it easy to forget how unbelievably sharp the knife is again and have nicked myself a couple of times. Be careful! 5I am so glad I purchased thisWow! I have owned a whetstone for years, but never quite gotten the hang of sharpening my knives on it (I'm so terrified of screwing up the blade). A whetstone takes more time, creates more mess, & is a challenge to use when there are little ones in the kitchen, eager to help/interfere. I am so glad I purchased this! It's fast, fool-proof, & made my knives waaaaaaaaay sharper than any whetstone. What's best, they have kept their edge far longer than I expected. I think this has made using knives much safer for me (I have not cut myself with a knife once since purchasing this; I used to do so regularly enough that I keep bandaids in one of my kitchen drawers. A sharp blade is safer than a dull blade!). I really cannot recommend enough. The only "downsides" (if you can even call them that) are that it does take up more space than a whetstone (so I store it on a garage shelf--I only need to use it every 5 months or so) & that it makes a rather unpleasant sound when used (duh, you're scraping metal!), so my kids run out of the room while I do it. But hey, the sound doesn't last long & wow, does it sharpen my knives well! 5Decent knife sharpenerJust the facts: One electric knife sharpener with two sharpeners (one to sharpen and one to shine) and suction cups on the bottom to hold it still for safety.Pros: Easy to set up and use. It does sharpen your knives.Cons: It seems to grind the blade too much, this may be something that improves as we learn to use it better. I'll update this review if we find a way to use it more effectively.Would I recommend this? If you can sharpen by hand this isn't that big of an improvement. If you need that little extra help, go for it.Feel free to ask any questions and I'll be happy to answer them! 4Does the job but leaves room for much improvement.Tried to sharpen 4 knives the first day I received the this knife sharpener.Slot 1 is great for taken worn down kitchen knives and making them sharp.Slot 2 for me is good in theory for honing but not so much in practice. The instructions states to pull the knife slowly through slot 2 for a duration of 3 to 4 seconds followed by a quick pass for the finishing move.I found that slot 2's wheel is lose or not properly balanced on the shaft of the spindle leading to mass chattering when honing the knives. This chattering takes what decent edge slot 1 places on the knife and leaves nothing put chatter bumps all the way down the edge.I tried several different knife lengths, thick to thinner blades, and slow to fast pulls through slot 2 with the same results. While the video does not show chattering my most certainly do.Also this unit does not allow you to sharpen to the manufacturer's edge near the tang of the knife blades. This is not a deal breaker on large knives but on pocket it leaves a little bit to be desired to have a fully sharpened knife edge from tip to tail.Nice for kitchen use but I won't be running my buck or other hunting knives through this thing for sure. 3Works quickly with noticeable results.I was hesitant to purchase something so large just to occasionally sharpen knives. It generally bugs me to have a big "uni-tasker" taking up space in my cabinet when I could do the same thing with a sharpening stone and such. However the trick is I have no freaking clue how to sharpen a knife with those things, so I was looking for something that was relatively idiot proof. I chose this model over the others based on the name brand I had heard of and the generally positive reviews. The body is made of plastic but generally feels sturdy. I haven't noticed it sliding around or binding up when I use it. Sharpening the knives is easily... just draw the knife across each of the openings a few times, in turn, and there's an immediate noticeable difference in the way they cut. A few folks have mentioned in their reviews that it "grabbed" the knives but I have not experienced it. I think the key is not to force the knives down... if you have decent quality knives, their weight alone will be enough pressure to make them sharpen correctly. This is basically a grinder, so you should expect some noise from the unit as the stones grind against the metal of the knives, but it was not anything tremendously loud. Also as a result of the grinding you will notice a bit of metal dust, I guess technically filings, on the knives when you're done. A simple wipe down or even rinse should clear that right up. 5Well Worth ItWe have had this for a couple of years after using dull knives forever. This sharpener puts a decent edge on all our knives. The Japanese knives have a slightly different angle but I have even used it on them. The use of a steel to finish the edge is probably a good addition as, while sharper, the edge could be a little smoother. If your looking for a good quick sharpen that isn't too expensive this might be it. I have developed a bit of a light touch when stoking the knife through the stones which seems to improve the edge. Also I wipe the edge with a single stroke of a cloth after each stoke to keep the stone from clogging but that's my own technique. 4... this up because I was simply looking for something better than the manual sharpenersI picked this up because I was simply looking for something better than the manual sharpeners, it's amazing. It actually sharpened my butcher knife so much that it cut through my hoodie when I reflexively wiped it on my side after a rinse while cooking. I've had that exactly knife for 10 years, and when it was brand new it wasn't that sharp, hence my development of such a lax behavior with it.You should most certainly purchase this, you should also most certainly be aware of the instructions, as well as the fact that this thing doesn't just do "a good job", it does an incredible job and you should be careful with your knives after sharpening them if you're accustomed to dull-ish blades. 5Surprised me. Big time.My arthritis makes sharpening my knives manually pretty painful. I make cooking videos so I use my knives a lot. I decided to invest in an electric sharpener, but I didn't expect a lot considering my price range. I did some research and saw that this little machine is often rated in the top 10, and at this price point, that surprised me, so I decided to go with it.Well, let me tell you, that was a good investment. I read all the directions, practiced on a knife that had not been sharpened for 2 years and was so dull it wouldn't cut paper, just made a dent. It took several times running it through both sides of sharpening and then honing, but wow. You could shave with it now. Makes a clean cut on paper and cuts a tomato or onion almost paper thin with no tearing. One of my viewers reported that she has been using an identical one for 5 years with no loss of sharpening quality.Would I recommend? Unless you want to spend $200 for the best ever with diamond blades, this is your new best friend. Yes, yes, yes. 5Grinding wheels too coarse in my opinion, for honing fine knives. This is subjective, and could not have been "judged" by reading all the reviews, which I did before purchase. In my judgment, this sharpener uses grinding wheels that are much too coarse to be used on high quality knives, to get a finely honed edge. The sharpener has two spinning grinder wheels: one side is for "sharpening" and the other side for "honing." The sharpening side is so coarse, it makes me feel like I'd like to put my garden shears in there for sharpening. I think my shop grinder in the basement is of a similar grit. The honing side feels like it would be good for sharpening a dull knife, but not for honing a good knife. The directions recommend a honing every time you use your knife. Well, that is generally true, but if you used this sharpener to hone your knife every time you used it, within six months your knife would be gone. It is that coarse, and removes that much metal, each time you "hone" it.Amazon accepted my return request. 1
