like pair of granny panties hanging on the lineI bought this in a rush because the fitted mattress cover that we had had for years needed to be replaced (it was waterproof and the rubbery liner material began to come off). It looked similar to the one that I was replacing, and I needed it fast. It arrived the next day, and I was disappointed that the sides were not elastic (like the one I was replacing), but I was in a hurry, washed it and put it on the mattress. My poor mattress looked like a toddler wearing his dad's boxers! It doesn't hug the mattress (we have a pretty thick mattress, I can align the cover, but it doesn't have any staying power), and it doesn't help the sheets at all. 1Read before purchasingThis is a terry cloth cover with a latex backing. Only the top side is waterproofed with latex coating (underneath). It is effectively a mattress pad with a latex coating on the underside of the top. Pictures in the reviews were accurate..Latex, over time, with use, temperature exposure and washings, will start to crack and thus lose its waterproofing. Even worse, it may eventually (years) start to decompose depending on how good the latex application process control was..As this is only a 5 sided mattress cover, it will not protect against bed bugs, mites and other creatures that can crawl around the edges of the cover. Spills that make it to the edge will potentially also get to the mattress. It is deceiving to state that this cover 'breathes' as it is not breathing through the latex seal..I bought this for a brand new guest bed that will be used 10x per year by adults, so I wanted to save a little and will simply trash this cover in 2-3 years. If you are really worried about allergens, bed bugs, spills, etc. get a zippered 6 sided cotton-only 'encasement' style mattress protector. The 'waterproofness' should come from the cotton weave rather than a plastic type coating. This cotton weave will 'breathe.' This will, however, cost 50% or more than this protector..I was disappointed with how lightweight this protector was, which causes the top surface to easily form folds (creases). These creases, with use, cause the latex to crack sooner which further shortens the life of the product..I have not received any discounts, free products or other incentives in writing this review. 3The Revenge of the Snowy Mattress CoverI never knew it felt abused. I had no warning of the distress my mattress cover was experiencing. But today it all became known. It all started when I broke a small bottle of perfume on my bed and I was completely mortified. But gratefulness wafted over me as I suddenly remembered that I have a Luna mattress pad and my mattress is probably fine. I just need to wash everything. Relief. I started to pull off the sheets and the mattress pad to quickly remedy this now overpowering aroma. But what was this? All. Over. My. Bed. The mattress pad's water protectant covering had disintegrated into a million tiny pieces of plasticky awfulness. Mortification struck again as I tried to ball up the offending mattress pad and contain all of the pieces tht kept flying everywhere. Suddenly I remembered the original crisis of the perfume that was threatening to consume my nostrils with its potent odor. My hand found the spot. Sure enough, due to the millions of cracks in the mattress pad waterproof protection that was now littering my floor in a snowlike fashion, the spot was damp. And now my hand stunk of the now awful scent. At the end of myself I called for my husband and since there must have been complete desperation in my voice, he came quickly. He was stunned but he helped me pull the mattress up to a standing position and we proceded to beat the mattress. Snow in a not-frozen fashion filled the room. We stepped on it and pressed it firmly to the ground as we continued to pummel the mattress. In a moment of panic I beat the mattress with my fists to try to at least make the fragments of plastic subside. My husband, assuming the anger that must be the reason for this moment of rage assured me that all would be well. After cleaning the snowstorm from the cracks and crevices and combing it out of my hair, I sit to write this review. Let this be a lesson to us all. This mattress pad only lasted us five years before it wreaked its vengeance upon us. How I wished that when I noticed the slight peeling only a few months ago after washing it that I had replaced it at that time. But alas, it was not to be. Now if only I could sleep and rest my weary head on my bed... that stinks of flowers gone rancid. 1So far so good!! Very protective! My son has has two bed wetting accidents and a bloody nose since we purchased this protector and have had none of them leak to the mattress. It has held up just fine being washed and dryed on regular. 5Not for Chemically sensistiveStrong smell of some toxic rubber or plastic. Before I ordered it I emailed the company to ask them what it was made of. They ignored me. That was a red flag. I took the chance and ordered . This product may save you from dust mites. They probably would all die from the chemical outgassing. However, if you thrive with the 'new car smell' it will probably work for you. 1LUNA MATTRESS PROTECTORS ARE FANTASTIC..We received the item 3 days ago and I followed the suggestion to launder it before using. As soon as It was dry, I put it on our bed and that night my elderly husband had an accident and I had to strip the bed. It worked just as advertised, not a spot soaked through to our new Sleep Number mattress!! Needless to say, we were elated that none of the soil leaked through. I was concerned about laundering the mattress protector without bleach as I wanted to make sure I got all the stains out but that didn't turn out to be an issue. The Luna product came out as clean as clean could be. We also liked that the Luna product is very generous sized and soft. If there was a complaint it's that it takes so long to dry because you have to use low heat to dry it. Yes I definitely would recommend this product and will be ordering another in the very near future. 5Disappointing In Quality - Has Potential But Fails In Comparison To Other BrandsWe share our bed with two Old English Bulldogs plus there's the binge watching, snacking, drinking that takes place on the bed, I'm talking about what the dogs do on the bed , not us we only snooze. That said a mattress protector is essential for keeping out spills and all sorts of things from getting into and ruining your mattress. With a brand new bed I was quick to log onto Amazon and grab one of two tried and true brands that have served us well in the past SleepTite and SafeRest. Well, SleepTite is a terrific product but now priced over $100 for the King size and the equally good SafeRest seemed nowhere to be found. I thought the Luna looked like a safe bet and bought one.The polyurethane on the underside was slathered on thick - really thick. This means two things it crinkles loudly as you lay on it and when you move ( a far cry from silent) and it's hot to sleep on even when covered with a thick fluffy mattress pad. The addition of the extra pad cut down the noise but did little to stop the build up of body heat. The terry cloth on the top side is skimpy compared to other brands not in itself a deal breaker for because we use the second pad for loft and comfort. But for those who just use a bottom sheet between you and the Luna pad may find this uncomfortable, I know I would. Finally, it's way over-sized, as another reviewer stated "it's like a pair of grannies panties" Our mattress is 16 inches thick and still the fit was far too loose. I ended up buying a protector we had used in the past and returned the Luna. I had hoped to like the Luna, it has some quality touches, nice stitching and plenty of stretch to the skirt. So even very thick mattresses can be accommodated. However the shortcomings are significant, enough so that we returned ours.I would suggest that until Luna addresses it's short comings look towards a more established brand. 2Recommended with my Helix MattressAfter purchasing a new mattress from Helix along with the "We are preparing your order" email were links to things to spend even more money on. I initially passed on additional purchases but in the long run decided a mattress protector was probably a good idea since you can't really wash a foam mattress. So I dove back through the emails and this was in the recommendations so I clicked it!, what was shocking was I expected to go back to their site and pay huge amounts but nope the link went straight to Amazon, go Helix. Anyway the protector arrived and I was super skeptical, think thin terry washcloth with a grocery bag glued to the back. I read the directions carefully and after reading reviews I washed it first but it was still crinkly and no way was it going to breathe. I was WRONG. I put it on the bed, threw on the sheets and it was quiet and I slept cool as well which is a major concern because I sleep like a furnace. I have only had it 4 nights so I will do a follow up if anything changes. As of right now I would have given it 5 stars based on my impressions but it has one major flaw which is not address, the washing instruction make it very very clear to only dry on low heat. My dryer only has High, Medium, and Fluff. I read on google to use the less dry function repeatedly until it was dry and some other stuff but nothing for sure. So to be on the safe side I spread it out and let it air dry and it took forever! I spun it twice and it was still pretty wet, my guess is because it is waterproof the spin cycle cant get all the water out if the terry side is not facing the holes.TL;DR Great Product so far, Sleeps Cool, Check to see if your dryer has low heat or you have to air dry, will update if things change. 3Holds water and then absorbs like a towelI tried this under a faucet to see how it works. I made a pocket with my hand and filled it with water and I was able to make a pool so that none of the water leaked out (photo below). The water was gradually absorbed into the top layer, which has a soft cotton material like a fine soft towel, and then the pool of water eventually disappeared as it was absorbed. The bottom stayed completely dry. So this mattress protector provides both a water barrier underneath, plus an absorbent layer on top to help soak up and spread the spill. 5Accidental spillsThe night I received my brand new mattress I threw this mattress protector on right away. I FINALLY had a brand new mattress! Two hours later my girlfriend spilled her ice tea...No worries I thought! The selling point of this mattress protector for me was, accidental spills. Well. Not so much. The liquid went right through and onto my mattress. The protector acted as more of an additional sheet than a shield.Maybe it does it s job for dust mites and such, but not for spills. 1
