... closetmaid and think what is provided here is a good starter kitI have used both this and closetmaid and think what is provided here is a good starter kit. However, if you plan to modify such as add more pieces then you better do a cost comparison. I find that closetmaid is a tad cheaper if you plan to expand and put in some of the nice accessories such as corner shelving, the draws, etc. The other issue is this is not sold in stores, ONLY the WHITE version is sold at lowes exclusively. I will tell you now, this unit is very pricey when it comes to buying non-white additions such as the shelves and wall mounts. Build quality I was underwhelmed, I find the clothing pole a little more flimsy than expected. Although it does hold, the metal feels cheaper. If this unit as is fits your needs, then go for it. If you will need to expand any further than you may want to look elsewhere. 3While I'm fairly happy with the final productWhile I'm fairly happy with the final product, and I'm ultimately happy that I avoided the cutting of racks and rails involved with ClosetMaid, I ran into some installation issues. Long story short: you may want to run to the hardware store for $10 of extra hardware before you start installing, including:- #10x2" anchors (10-12 of them, depending on how many of your uprights will go directly on top of studs)- #10x2" flat Phillips screws (maybe 4-8 extra beyond what's in the box)- A 1/8" drill bit that's at least 2" long (sounds silly, but go check your set now. Mine wasn't long enough.)First, the top rail:- The box says to install the top rail at 86.5". I'm unsure where they got that number from, but since my closet is only 88" tall, I decided to lower it so I could actually utilize the as many notches as possible in the rails. I wanted to use the extensions to make a shoe rack at the bottom, and since the extension + upright are about 73", I mounted the top rail at 80" (remember to account for any moulding along the bottom, as that will stop rails from lying flush against the wall!). I'm a little tight for vertical space with the rods, so if my closet were taller, higher would be better, but don't feel obligated to go with the 86.5".- Make sure your 1/8" drill bit is at least 2" long! I think my drill bit set is a fairly standard one, but my 1/8" bit was only 1.5" long, and so the 2" long screws would not go in until I made a trip to the hardware store for a new drill bit.The upright rails:- DO NOT assume these will naturally hang perfectly perpendicular to the top rail. In fact, mine "naturally" hung skewed by about 20 degrees, so I needed to use a level when hanging them, though the directions made no mention of it. Since I had to adjust them, I know the top isn't sitting solidly on the top rail, so I added extra screws in. It seemed very strange that the directions only tell you to attach at the bottom anyway-- shouldn't we be going for as secure as possible?- The anchors included are incredibly cheap and nonsensical (see picture). I attempted to use two of them, and when I went to drive the screw in, the anchors just pulled out of the wall-- clearly not "anchoring" anything. So, while the package does include anchors, this is why I decided to get some extra #10x2" anchors.- I used every screw in the box (16 included), even though I didn't use one of the uprights and my top rail was only extended to 6' long. While you're at the hardware store, throw in some extra #10x2" flat Philips screws. 4-8 extra should be plenty.Once the top rail and uprights were attached to the wall, attaching the brackets and shelves was a breeze. I probably reconfigured it 12 times in half an hour before deciding on an arrangement I liked, and I love that if my needs change, I can just as easily reconfigure without needing to break out the drill again. 4Update - 3 years and it has been perfectNext month will be 3 years that I've owned this and I have not had one single problem. Nothing collapsed. No bent bars. Nothing. Not one issue. My clothes are heavy and I have filled the shelves and both top and bottom hanging racks. No problem. No buckling. Nothing. I live in apartment building so the walls aren't great. This product seems to be one of the better investments I've made.I guess I should expect the product to get worse over time, but at this moment, I love this 4-8ft closet. My partner and I have a lot of clothes. He has way more than I do and most of it needs to be folded. I tried those metal frames, but it tilted. I tried the plastic holder with the cover, but it tilted and couldn't hold our clothes. I couldn't deal with anymore. I considered a wardrobe, but I didn't want a heavy wooden product that I had to deal with moving at a later time. I saw wall storage and this caught my eye.It is perfect. I put it right on the wall and it is holding our hung shirts, folded shirts, and hung jeans. We aren't small people and these are heavy clothes. It is not bending, folding, or creaking. It appears to be very sturdy. When you first start it, you just have to find the studs and start with the first piece of metal. Once you get the first two holes aligned, it really gets much easier. We followed the instructions, measured the pieces out 26' apart, and used the drywall anchors when necessary. I used a 5'16 drill bit for the drywall anchors.Only had one issue, the plastic stoppers for the hanging rail... two of them were cracked, but it really didn't matter. They were still usable.I love this closet organizer. I am very happy that I have it. I know it's only been a week, but it is perfect for me. I do think this is a project for two people. I am sure one, capable person can handle it, but I am the handy one and my partner measures things and makes everything even and level. I suggest reading the instructions 3-4 times. 5fits an 8 ft wide closet.Took me about 4 hours myself to do it. I have close to 9 ft wide closet. initially while i was putting them the shelvings, i didnt think they would hold. It felt like the shelves would keep bobbing up and down with just a nudge. Specially the rod holders. Seems they would not hold. But so far so good. I have not put as much as i wanted but it looks like its holding up.The shelves needs clothes on it to keep it stable. I would have wished a more closer spaced wiring though so that clothes dont have indentations. You would have to put shelf liners to get your clothes lying flat. Not such a big deal really. Getting used to it.btw, took me for 4-5 hours because i kept adjusting and readjusting them to my height preference. Sometimes you think you want it one way but once they are slowly getting built, you will notice that some re-arragements are required. Like i thought i liked top to bottom shelves but since im short and i have to tippy toe to get to the top shelf, my face will or could hit the corner of the lower shelves, so decided to use the top half for hanging clothes and the mid half for shelves. Worked out well. I did have to go to my local home depot to buy some extra upright brackets because i wanted more lower shelves (costs $5 only)also, the top 86.5 ft recommendation was a bit too high for me. Wish i knew off hand. After putting that bar and the 1st 2 brackets, i couldn't undo anymore without having to spakle. It was a bit too high for me. Im 5'2. I wish i either placed it up higher so i have the top unused and the bottom as another shelf. Or lowered it so that i could have used the top as a shelf. Anyways, im happy with what i built. Labor of love 4Great Quality, Mind Blowing ValueAmazingly low price for a great closet system. Seriously. At ~$86, this is a fraction of what you will pay for Elfa, and far less than ClosetMaid. I did weeks of research before buying (I recommend you search Google for "Closet Storage Systems: Elfa vs. Rubbermaid vs. Closetmaid" and read the first article, it's a fantastic comparison of the leading systems), and finally settled on the 4-8 ft Rubbermaid Configurations in "Titanium." I find the Titanium finish classier than the white, but opinions may vary.Install was pretty easy, despite the fact that I am not what you would call a "handy" person. The wall I wanted to attach it to turned out to have metal studs, which are a nightmare to drill into, so after consulting with a contractor (my brother), I went out and bought a big pack of Togglers: TOGGLER SNAPTOGGLE BB Toggle Anchor with Bolts, Zinc-Plated Steel Channel, Made in US, 3/8" to 3-5/8" Grip Range, For 1/4"-20 UNC Fastener Size (Pack of 10) which are super strong and super easy to install. Long story short, the Togglers did the job, and I think the closet looks pretty good. I also purchased the tie and belt organizer: (Rubbermaid 3H98 Configurations 30-Hook Tie and Belt Organizer, Titanium(FG3H9800TITNM)), which I'm very happy with. In my opinion, at $86, this is hands-down the best option out there for home closet organization. 5Works greatWe used 3 sets to transform a tiny 7x8 room into a walk in closet. We used up all the little extender pieces and then some, but had extra shelves left over for a guest room closet too.My only suggestion- don't listen to the recommended height to hang the starter piece. We hung ours a little lower. There was still plenty of space to hang tbe extenders, and it gave us more space to put long term storage boxes up top. 5Worthy of a short story apparentlyA few days ago we heard a large crash. The closet rod had failed. Ugh! I have a lot of clothes so the contents of the closet were pretty much spilling everywhere. Ugh!Cut to me furiously searching on Amazon for a closet organizer. You guys are awesome (!!) and thanks to the in-depth reviews and pictures I finally settled on the Rubbermaid Configurations Deluxe Custom Closet Organizer System Kit, 4-to-8-Foot, Titanium for my roughly 7 closet. Of course Amazon had the cheapest price, even though I looked around. It arrived one business day later and...It s awesome! It would have been really easy to put up too, have I owned a stud finder. It took a few unnecessary holes and we ended up using most the drywall screws, but once I got past that part it was easy peasy. It seems very sturdy and I love that you can change up the design. I think I ll buy two more extenders so I can add baskets or shelves to the other side for maximan versatility. I have to say I am proud of my work! I m sure there are people out there who can do this by themselves, but I would recommend having someone with you for assistance.I m already planning to buy two more for the house, along with the stud finder 5My closet looks divine !I bought two kits and a tie rack add on- We aren't very handy so - the handyman that we use put it up for us - It took him only a few hours (he had to rip out our old shelving before he started). He used the main part of the kits on the two longer walls in the closet and the extra shelves at the very back of the closet. It gives the closet a great look and there is more than enough space to hang everything or put things like socks on the shelves in those soft sided fabric baskets. The closet is more functional and clothes aren't crammed in. I was worried that weight of clothing would be a problem but I don't see any sagging nor hear any groaning of the hardware. 5Clever, Well-engineered, Attractive Closet SystemI spent a lot of time researching closet systems. I liked the minimalist, high tech look of the of the wire systems, and read several comparative reviews of Elfa, Closetmaid and Rubbermaid. Elfa was orders of magnitude more expensive. Closetmaid required a lot of cutting to fit the components, and there was indication of problems with the PVC coating. Rubbermaid required no cutting and used a more durable powder coating. I really liked the titanium color and settled on the Rubbermaid system. My closet is 9.5 ft x 6.5 ft. When designing how it would be put together, I appreciated pictures I found here and elsewhere as reference. I have posted photos of mine that will hopefully be helpful to others. My solution was three 6 ft sections. I ordered three 4-8 ft kits to accomplish this. I determined I needed two extra short uprights to complete the design. Otherwise, the kits provided everything I needed. While wire closet systems are considered "budget" options, I wanted to try and get a spiffier, more upscale look. Going against conventional wisdom, I chose a dark color to paint the closet, Valspar "Portland Twilight," flat. I think this dark gray with the titanium components looks really sharp.I have a bad shoulder, so I hired a handy person to demolish, patch and paint the closet. She also helped me put up the rails, but I was able to do the rest of the installation. It was not only easy, but enjoyable to do. A couple of things will be helpful. First, I have a small level that is magnetic on one edge. I could stick it on the upright to find plumb without needing an extra hand to hold it. Second, I have had bad experiences with the type of wall anchors provided. I ordered TOGGLER SnapSkru SP Self-Drilling Drywall Anchor with Screws, Glass-Filled Nylon, Made in US, For #6 to #10 Fastener Sizes (Pack of 50) from Amazon and these worked beautifully. The uprights are rock-solid.When I was putting the clothes back, I hit a snag with the arrangement. No sweat. A quick reconfiguration of a closet pole and a couple of shelves solved the problem. The flexibility of this system already came in handy. In the end, I have 2 ft more of usable closet pole, and a lot more shelving. I am absolutely delighted with the results. As a finishing touch, I donated all of my old mix-mosh of coat hangers and replaced them with Topline Classic Wood Shirt Hangers - Natural Finish (20-Pack) and Topline Classic Wood Suit Hangers - 20 Pack (Natural Finish) from Amazon. I now have a great looking, organized closet that didn't cost an arm and a leg. 5Great system that allows installation creativity! We have these closet systems for 3 of our bedrooms. I have the ability and tools to make my own wooden closet shelving, but wanted the ability to easily change shelving heights or locations if we needed to. This also took a lot less time than making my own shelving. I actually used more than 1 kit per closet. I purchased 5 kits for the 3 closets I have. I didn't see anyone do the layout I wanted with these in the photos, so attached are what I did and how I feel this maximized storage space for me. The width of the smaller shelves were a little wider than I had space for so I just cut them down to the width I needed. I got these titanium colored ones so my cuts wouldn't be noticable. I used a sawzall with a metal blade and then smoothed and evened the cuts with my bench grinder. I did the double clothes hangers and shelves which is awesome compared to when we only had one bar. I saved space and allowed for wider clothes hanging bars by putting the smaller shelves on the left and the right side walls. I even trimmed the longer racks that are on the back wall, instead of completely overlapping the shelves and not needing to cut them, and it gives a much cleaner look. I also used more of the supports on the back wall because I'm using the double racks and knew there was gonna be much more weight because of this. I wouldn't have trusted only two vertical supports for this setup. But, I caught these on sale and have about $125 into each closet since I used 5 kits for 3 closets. I think this is the best money I've spent in a while. 5
