I have been using Soft Heat blankets since 2008I have been using Soft Heat blankets since 2008. It took a while to find an electric blanket that doesn't know it's an electric blanket. For me, a Soft Heat blanket is a light-weight blanket that keeps me warm. Over the years, I've slept on top of it as well as under it. I've put blankets on top of it and used it as a summer blanket without the power cord plugged in.One time I thought I had a problem. I pressed the on button, the control light came on, and a few seconds it went off. After going through that process several times, I realized I hadn't connected the power cord to the blanket. The instructions don't say the control light won't stay on if the blanket power cord isn't connected to the blanket.Soft Heat Luxury Micro-Fleece Low-Voltage Electric Heated Twin Size Blanket, Beige 5Doesn't warmAfter 3 Biddeford brand electric blankets that failed, I hoped this one would work. I should have noticed the contradictions in the write-up: "...an automatic pre-heat and hold feature that makes sure that your bed is warm and cozy before you climb in for the night" and "It will NOT feel warm to the touch of your hand, even on the highest (HI) setting." and "...an even heat and all over penetrating warmth with no annoying hot or cold spots."It does NOT warm the bed, at all. Even after 2 hours of pre-heating on high, the sheets are cold. When you turn over in the night, the new spot is ice cold. This is no different than a regular, non-electric blanket! Adding a light blanket on top of it did not help. Why pay to climb into cold sheets?! Don't spend your money on this. My search continues... 1Some things they didn't tell youI ve owned three previous low voltage electric blankets for different beds over time and I am sold on the technology. I won t go into all of the details because you wouldn t be here looking at them if you didn t already know the pros and cons. I just want to add a few personal observations to what you already know. One is that for whatever reason there are some places that think these things should cost a fortune. The technology here isn t rocket science, a low voltage blanket shouldn t cost any more than a regular one. Oddly with this brand the tan color I chose was much less than any other color or brand, with the identical thing in some other colors costing almost three times as much. Shop carefully if color isn t a major issue for you, it s not for me the blanket will always be hidden under a bedspread anyway.Compared to some others this one has a rotary control dial. I prefer that, it is simpler to use especially in the dark, there is a wider range of temperatures and less to go wrong. I would not feel the same way about rotary controls for regular electric blankets because some of them turn on and off with a loud clicking sound but this one is totally silent. I think the way it works is that it keeps a constant temperature rather than clicking on and off. And speaking of sounds, some have noted that they hear a high pitched sound with some blankets. I don t think that is normal, I ve never heard it from any low voltage blanket I ve owned and I don t hear it from this one.As far as being a fire hazard, the reality is that anything that uses electricity can become a fire hazard, it is total luck of the draw. They sell millions of these things and it is very rare that one has a problem and who knows, that could be due to a thousand different thing, including user abuse or misuse. This particular model has over 3000 customers reporting about it and literally a handful who may have encountered a defect or misused it. I had a car once that had an engine fire, I would never think of saying I ll never own a Ford again because they can catch fire. In other words I wouldn t worry about it.If you have never actually used a low voltage blanket you might think at first that it doesn t get as hot as a regular electric blanket. That s only partially true, most traditional electric blankets get hot, turn off, cool down and get hot again. A low voltage blanket raises the temperature under the blanket enough to warm you up and keep you warm at a constant temperature. Different technologies, same results. In terms of actual real life use, the first night which was very cold I started it at the 5 position and it was very toasty, in fact it was too warm for me. I ended up settling on the 2 position as my ideal sleeping temperature. It s simply not true that low voltage blankets don t get warm, I think if I turned it all the way up to 10 I could fry an egg on it.And one more thing for those who have never owned one the difference between sleeping under a blanket with thick wires in it and a big electrical junction box at your feet, and the concern of electrical energy waves sinking into your body compared to not feeling any wires, not kicking a big heavy plug all night and knowing that only low voltage is being used, well the difference is like night and day. Note that on this blanket the part that plugs into the blanket is very small and it is located at the very edge where you could never feel it. 5I am very happy with the blanket itselfI am very happy with the blanket itself. The wires inside cannot be felt once in it and doesn't feel like a regular warming blanket. However, the wires leading from the controller to the blanket are fragile and actually split from the plug into the blanket. I bought this blanket in July and have only recently been using it. The blanket did shut itself off once the wires detached.Would someone please post contact information, i.e. email address for seller? Also, I don't understand why Amazon is still selling his blanket after many pictures of dangerous wires and fire? 1Own two-Love them both!I own two. Both purchased from Amazon. I have no idea why I am not a verified purchaser.Anyway, things to consider with this blanket. Low voltage will give you virtually NO electric bill. I have left them on by mistake and never saw an electric jump. Since I have two and use them daily,(one on my couch for daytime comfort and one on my bed) I would know if the electric bill changed on a monthly/seasonal basis. It does not.The low voltage also presents a potential problem because of the tiny wires imbedded used to heat. Just last week, the older blanket (about 5 yrs old) had a problem for the first time. On closer inspection I found that the wires coming from the imbedded receiver in the blanket had broken. I think that this will eventually happen. I was able to re-connect the wire by soldering it and using shrink wrap to seal the union. This required opening the blanket up by cutting a small flap in the fabric. Not something that everyone would want to do. But it is low voltage. This should extend the life of the blanket for another year or two.IF I had not done this, the blanket is still well worth the price and the wonderful comfort I get from this type of blanket. Only those who have one of these can really know how comfy the heat is. The heat is very even with no hot spots. I have a queen bed but purchased the smaller size because I like to be able to get away from the heat sometimes in the night if I wake up hot.Hope this review helps you make a choice. 5The heater wires in the blanket probably act like a long antenna for the power supply noiseThis blanket uses a computer-type high-frequency switching power supply for the low voltage. Despite claiming to meet FCC Part15 standards, it causes so much RFI (radio noise) that it's impossible to listen to a radio nearby when the blanket is on. The heater wires in the blanket probably act like a long antenna for the power supply noise, something I would not want to sleep under. 1Coldest electric blanket I've ever owned. If I could give it a zero star I would. If you do not mind going to bed and freezing for 5 hours and then waking up sweating, this blanket is for you. It arrives with a red sticker that says "This blanket will not feel warm to the touch" and suggests starting out with it on high and adjusting the settings down as you see which setting works best. Unless you are hot blooded, this blanket will not keep you warm in a 60 degree bedroom. I have owned several electric blankets in my life and of several different brands, all of them cheaper and all of them worked better than this expensive one. Save you money, don't buy it. I usually set it at 7 and place another blanket on top of it to keep warm. 1BEWAREI bought this blanket 3 months ago, and at first it worked well. The heat is very spotty and last night it caught fire. It scared meright out of the bed. Nothing was damaged, but not the kind of language I wanted my kids to hear from me. I always liked electric blanketsand thought people were way too paranoid to think they might be dangerous, but this is my last one. 1Could Easily Start A FireBe careful! I had the same experience as other users. Woke up to the smell of burning plastic. And based on the pictures, it seems to burn a hole in the same place on the transformers every time. I am so relieved I got to it before it started a fire. The controls also felt very cheap, the display isn't even digital. There is a reason this blanket sells for 25% of it's "retail" price. Yikes. 1Rough material cheaply made connectorsRough material connections cheaply made returned it 1
