Customer Reviews

OUTSTANDING value for a GREAT ink. This rates very highly with me for a variety of reasons.First of all, I've been using Speedball Super Black ink in the 2 Oz bottles pretty much forever. I use it for wood-staining, leather staining and, oddly, writing (yes, I know that's what it's used mostly for by other people). I've adorned briefcases, bows, arrows, steampunk guns and other arts and crafts with it and it has always gone on evenly, stood up well and looked good.I've rated the 2 oz bottles five stars for the ink's versatility, durability, lack of rubbing off and ease of use. But getting the ink in a bottle this huge is the BEST VALUE possible for Speedball Super Black ink. I'd give it six stars if I could simply because for the savings between one of these and sixteen 2 oz bottles, one would save over sixty bucks. For the price of four 2 oz bottles, you can get this one.I love great values. If you do crafts or one hell of a lot of writing, and you need a LOT of India ink, this should be what you get every time.5Must dry for about 24 hours to be waterproof. I use it under watercolor paintings. This bottle is huge - 1 quart (32oz) will last me at least a year of regular inking and painting with it. I was happy to find that diluted with water I could get a good gray scale, because I also use india ink as a tonal value (shading) underneath watercolor paintings. It doesn't react to the salt trick as well as watercolor paint does for creating texture, however it is a great ink for sumi-e or chinese brush painting. It does make beautiful wicking dispersion patterns when drawn on to wet watercolor paper. Great for expirimenting with for fine art.My order placed April 2016 had a black white and red label displaying some intricate calligraphy scrollwork, which was different than the main product photo at the time on amazon. I'm not sure if they have changed the product at all recently with the label change, but this worked very well for me. I almost didn't buy this due to a review that said it wasn't waterproof anymore, but as long as you let it thoroughly dry it is waterproof. I wrote with it using a dip pen on watercolor paper, waited several hours and scrubbed it with a wet paint brush. It smeared, and continued to smear until after 12 hours. After 24 hours there was no more smearing of this black ink - it just required a long dry time. If you live in a humid environment I imagine it might even take a couple days to become waterproof.5So far this ink has proven to be great for use with dating &/or adding serial numbers on guitar bodies & necks.Speedball 3398 India Ink seems to be a better quality ink than some of the ink's that come with ink pads. I tested an area where I used my date stamp & serial number stamp with the ink that came with the stamp pad I purchased. After allowing the ink to dry for maybe a half hour or so, I tried cleaning the area & was surprised that it started to smear. Since I work with guitars & parts that I restore, it's really important to be able to put any identification numbers back in the area's after I clean up or change colors if it's a body getting repainted. Along with proof photo's that I take & then keep in the associated folder on my laptop, instead of using a cheaper quality ink, I've been using the Speedball 3398 India Ink because after it dries, I do not have to worry about it wearing off after the cleaning process, if it's needed. Since you can buy this ink in red, keeping the original colors is also nice. I haven't found the larger bottles yet, just being able to use the same OEM colors is fine.So far this has been my only experience with this ink. I'm sure they make fabric ink when the need for a permeate ink in this category is needed. Like I said above, I'm just working primarily with wood &/or plastics associated with instruments.4Great as an ebony wood dye.I've used this with great results to get a deep black in pine, oak and maple. Thinned about 20% with denatured alcohol a little bit goes a long way. You can use many options to apply it. My favorites are an air brush for deep grains like oak or a French polishing pad (cotton or linen cloth twisted around cotton balls). Finish with any non-water based clear coat. This brand is archival grade so there should be little to no UV fading over time.5Excellent ink product..!Speedball India ink is my ink of choice for both drawing and lettering. I even use it for personal writing sessions too. The ink is a consistent black and it dries to the touch fairly quickly. Within 24 hours it is waterproof enough that anyone should be able to watercolor or use markers over this ink with no problems. I've used Speedball India ink for years and I have no desire to change a good thing. I will certainly continue to purchase and recommend this product.5Pro caliber ink.I've been a professional cartoonist and comic book artist for the past 38 years, and I haven't found an ink that exceeds the quality of this brand. It lands on the paper without any webbing or bleed-out, and works extremely well in crow quill pens and brushes for fine line work. It may be a bit heavy for technical or fountain pens, but that is the trade off for any dense, jet black india ink. It's waterproof, doesn't fade when it's erased over, and seems well suited to all applications for cartooning and fine line ink drawing. As with all india inks, it's important to keep them mixed. I just give my bottle a few vigorous shakes once a week, and the ink stays consistently smooth and dark. Highly recommended for professional applications. I love this stuff.5Great value in inkThis is a great deal for some pretty good india ink. Unlike other reviewers, I bought this to use in an airbrush. I wanted large quantities of ink to use in practicing freehand airbrush (e.g., figure drawing, experimenting with templates). It is too pricey to use good airbrush paint for this purpose. So far I have nothing but good things to say about this ink. It flows well in my airbrushes without being reduced. I have been using it with a general purpose 0.3mm nozzle/needle combination, but I think it would be fine in a 0.2mm or 0.15mm gun as well. It is consistent, doesn't lead to much tip dry, and has a nice sheen on paper. At the price I bought three bottles. For those of us running 0.5mm or larger guns, you can clear out an ounce of ink pretty quickly. At standard prices that gets expensive, but with these bottles it is affordable.5Great for staining wood!I used this ink on some poplar frames I made for a client. The wood turned black instantly. I used wipe on polyurethane over the ink once it was dry. Turned out beautifully. I plan on using this ink instead of black paint on my wood projects from now on.5GREAT STAINING!!!I was able to restore a 30 year old dying desk to a beautiful production desk. This is so easy to work with and the finished product is beautiful.5Works great to ebonize hard white maple wood to a nice black with a satin sheen.I got this because it's one of only two ways to "Ebonize" hard maple. IT works great for this application. IT dried fast and only requires two coats and you end up with a nice black finish that is more of a satin sheen. I've tried to die, stain or any other method to color maple with no luck at all. This works nice and when dries it doesn't rub off.5
