Customer Reviews

How hot is it?First off, this is not a review in a normal sense. I can't review it because it never worked. I bought these two small units to use at my restaurant. I had others so I put these up to be used later. Much to my dismay they did not work. Stuck on zero. Tried hot and cold temps and nothing. So cant review. 1Accurate but NOT instantThis is NOT an instant read!!!! If that is what you want, DON'T buy this. Put it in ice water and it takes over 3 min to read the temp. Put it in boiling water and it takes 70 seconds. It is accurate and it has an adjustment to correct it, if it ever becomes in accurate but I already have one like that, I wanted instant. 1Cheep and works great, exactly as advertisedCheep and works great, exactly as advertised, some idiots like to say it doesn't come calibrated. Well of course not stupid that is why your supposed to calibrate it before each use. Use a cup of ice water and you should get, wait for it.......32 degrees oh my gosh who could have guessed that. Then if its not at the magic number you rotate the nut on the back with the plastic holder. The only complaint I would have and its not a big deal, is it does not have a green line for air conditioning. I purchased two at this price one for the inlet and one for the outlet. One for the freezer and one for the refrigerator. 5Highly recommended.I've had this for many years and it still works great. It's hard to beat for the price and it's never let me down. It fits into the sleeve snuggly and can be pulled out easily as well. The numbers are easy to read and the needle gets to them quickly. The spike is long enough for any reasonably sized piece of meat. It's really just a great thermometer, I would recommend this to anyone who cooks. 4Very slow and incorrectI went through the calibration procedure, and it still was reading about 30 degrees under when put into meat. Absolutely unreliable and a waste of money. It also takes about 5 minutes to get a reading out of it all. You could overcook your meat in that time. The dial is tiny tiny! I could not read it without a magnifier glass. It does not qualify as a working thermometer for these reasons. I replaced it with a digital thermometer for the about the same price that gives me the temperature to a tenth of a degree in about 3 seconds. 1This is very likely perfect for what it is and that I thought it ...I looked at the picture and didn't read the details -- which is my mistake and my review is to help anyone else from being as careless. This is NOT a meat thermometer. It's a pocket food thermometer that one uses (like a health inspector) to stick into food that has been prepared or is sitting in a warmer and seeing if the internal temperature meets legal standards. The head is one inch in diameter and it specifically says not to put it in the oven. This is very likely perfect for what it is and that I thought it was the meat thermometer it looks like is my fault for not reading the details (like note the description doesn't ever say anything about putting it in the food in the oven). This could be exactly what you want (if you know what it is, instead of just looking at the picture and assuming like me)! 3Great thermometerFor $4-5 this is very efficient and functional equipment. It's "instant read" because the dial is constantly adjusting to the temperature based on the metal inside the stem. So if you place it in boiling water it will take about 10 seconds for the metal in the stem to expand and accurately display the temperature of its surroundings. When I received it the gauge was off by a couple degrees, which is no big deal because I just placed it in the plastic holder it comes in and let it sit in boiling water until the gauge was steady and adjusted it according to the instructions (which is very easy - just twist the dial) to 212 degrees. Now it works very accurately, you can always test it by setting it in ice water or boiling water. I've only had it for a few days so I will update if anything happens. I only use this for measuring water temperatures - and for that it is definitely worth it over the more expensive thermometers! If you are planning to use this for measuring your meat temperatures I would suggest going for a digital read where the measuring part of the instrument is only in the tip. There is a dimple 2" from the tip where the thermometer must be submerged into whatever to give you the proper temperature so you could insert it into the side of a thin cut of meat and it should work properly. 5Simple and the price is right!I like the look of the thermometer scale and how you can see the needle rising to the accurate temperature. I prefer this look to the digital thermometers out there. The analog feeling feels good to me- and organic! Call me old fashioned. I am not as jazzed by the fact you have to make sure it's properly calibrated each time by testing it in boiling water first and calibrating it to match 212 degrees F. That feels like an extra step to me, that I'd prefer not to do. But since I don't need to take accurate temperatures that often, I like how simple and streamlined a design it is, how easy to clean it is and the price is awesome! 4Easy to use, functional and efficientI had this running joke with fiance. Every morning I make him coffee and breakfast before we head to work. He ALWAYS takes his cup of coffee and states it's too hot and then forgets about it but when he remembers, always acts very nice and says it was great coffee, however, I know he is just being sweet when he really should just go heat that cup up.I got this more as a joke-gift, and honestly was unsure if the device would work. When the product arrived, I read over the directions and everything was pretty self-explanatory.I tested it out with his morning cup of coffee to see how hot it was, then handed it to him, I made sure to keep an eye on the cup of coffee and then when he finally went to drink it, I made a joke and pulled out the thermometer, it was down to 75 degrees and we ended up cracking up on how many cold "amazing" cups of coffee he drank.Long story short, this little joke gift worked perfectly and honestly I think this is a very useful item to have in the house. And hopefully for me it will help me get closer to getting my fiance the perfect tempature cup of coffee. :) 5Sadly Never Really Worked and Apparently Not Eligible for a RefundThe temperature was incorrect when I received it. I read how it should be placed in ice water and rotated to set it correctly. That seemed to do the trick so I stored it in our travel trailer.A few months later when I went to use it in the trailer's refrigerator it was off by about ten degrees. When we got home I placed it in the freezer for a week and adjusted it every day - because it needed adjusting every day.I guess it's like the old joke about the broken watch; it tells the correct time twice a day.On edit, it was reading about 100 degrees Fahrenheit the other day in the house while it was really about 70. I generally don't care for one-star reviews, but this item really deserves it. 1
