A really great fryer that would be just about perfect if it was only a little deeper.I have kids with serious food issues/allergies. In order to cope with all of the things they cannot eat, we always eat at home and I always cook from scratch. As a result, I am always in the kitchen. I firmly believe in using the proper tool for the job whenever feasible so I purchased T-fal s FR8000 EZ Clean 3.5 Liter Oil Capacity Stainless Steel Deep Fryer with Professional Immersion Heating Element and Unique Filtration System for deep frying things like French Fries, Chicken, bread and taco shells. This fryer replaced the old model of the same thing I had purchased in 2005 and worn out.WHAT IS IN THE BOX: The T-Fal deep fryer is a rectangular box shaped fryer with handles on either side. A fairly large rectangular stainless steel box holds oil and the removable heating element. An immersible stainless steel basket fits in the box over the heating element. The heating element attaches to a plastic unit which houses the electrical components and the knobs that allow the temperature to be set. Acting like a drawer under the stainless steel box is a plastic holding bin for oil after it goes through the filter when filtration has been utilized. A removable cord is also included as well as instructions.WHAT I LIKE: Everything on this fryer, except for the heating unit component (and the cord) goes into the dishwasher!!! This is absolutely awesome for keeping the fryer clean!!! I think everything should be dishwasher safe in the 21st century, yet too few things are. Great job T-Fal!!!The plastic storage bin for oil now comes apart (the lid lifts off). This is definitely an upgrade from the last model I owned. I discovered the lid on my last one was not removable when I stored some filtered coconut oil in the plastic holding bin in the winter and it solidified. I was unable to remove the oil until summertime. I am so glad to see this design change since coconut oil is the healthiest oil for frying and it is all I use. Now if I need to remove solidified coconut oil from the plastic holding bin, I can pop off the lid and scrape it into the fryer. It is much more hygienic to store oil in a closed container rather than the fryer box itself so I am grateful for the design change. This fryer holds a lot of oil and a lot of food. I can easily fry 2 potatoes worth of French fries per batch with no issues.I love the removable basket that can be hung on the side to drip. It looks like the ones seen in restaurants and functions the same way. Thus I am not dumping as much oil onto my plates with the food.It doesn t take a ton of oil to fill this fryer. I bought 2 large bottles of coconut oil from Costco and it only took 1 to fill the fryer. I can store and reuse the oil over and over and over with this fryer so I can use the healthiest oil and not feel like I have spent too much. The temperature readings on the dial are now etched into the plastic. On my last one the numbers were merely painted on and they came off within the first few months that I owned the fryer. I am glad T-Fal fixed this issue with their present version of the fryer.WHAT I DON T LIKE: The actual frying space is not very deep. I tried to fry homemade tortillas into taco shells the other day in a mold that I own. I had to fry one side and then the other because I did not have the 3 inches of oil necessary to plunge the entire thing under the surface. I really think this fryer could be deeper. A couple more inches of frying space depth would make this a 5 star appliance. The cord falls out of the fryer too easily. I suppose it is a safety feature, but it is a pain in the neck.I purchased T-fal s FR8000 EZ Clean 3.5 Liter Oil Capacity Stainless Steel Deep Fryer with Professional Immersion Heating Element and Unique Filtration System at full price and am reviewing it of my own accord. All in all, I think it is a great fryer and would definitely recommend it. 4Great Idea, but Lousy ProductI really wanted to like this as the filtration system seemed like a great idea. I first bought the 1.8L fryer and the drain valve was incorrectly installed on the fryer, and wouldn't work. I verified this with with another unit in the store and returned it. I then bought the 3.5L model through Amazon. This time the valve didn't allow oil to flow when opened. Again, no filtration. Note that I provided plenty of time (overnight) for the oil to cool down. Finally, the fryer only reached 335F frying temperature, which resulted in soggy, oil soaked food. As others have stated, 375F is needed to fry most food properly. T-fal needs to improve its quality control. I wouldn't buy another product from them. 1It filters the oil - No messI freakin' love this thing!! I don't know if I am allowed to say that but it summons it up. I looked at the youtube videos and read about this deep fryer. It was a toss up between several other models however this one kept floating to the top of my list because of thefiltration option. I am one of those people who is a neat freak. I cannot stand my house to smell like cooked food days after it has been cooked. So I boil a big pot of water and add white vinegar and lemon essential oils as I fry to eliminate lingering he smells.Ok back to the fryer. It gets up temperature and maintains temperature well. The basket is convenient but is small. I opted not to use the basket a few times which increased my cooking capacity. Once the oil cooled I was able to filter it for storage. The filtered oil was unbelievably. It filtered all the bits of breading etc. out and leaves you with oil that can be used again. I use refined coconut oil which can be expensive so the fact that I can reuse the oil several times over is awesome. A word of caution the directions I received were not in English so before you start cooking be sure to remove the stopper on the plastic filter container and put it somewhere where it will not get lost. This is a simple gadget. It does not have the timers and extra bells and whistles of the others have. But a good cook does not need all of that because they will always adjust their technique etc to what they are working with. The filter option makes this thing worth its weight in gold. I was able to clean the fry and store the oil painlessly and with no spills. I do not fry food often but when I do I want it to taste good and be able to clean up with out a mess. 5Super ProductOk, it would seem obvious that you should let the oil cool before turning it to auto-filter, so it is a good idea. Don't tilt the unit while it is filtering the oil...it will leak. Pretty darned good (or best) residential deep fat fryer available today. 1. All parts but the heating element are washable. This is a huge deal for fryers as over time and usage, the oil makes them nasty. 2. The design has no rubber gasket on the top to get clogged with oil and bits of food. 3.The food cooks perfectly at the correct heat. 4. The plastic oil container can be washed in the dishwasher heat. 5. You can cook with the lid on or off without problems (I cook with it off). 6. The price is in line with the product quality. I've had a number of fryers over the years and this is the best I've used. 4Giant fryer with shallow available oil depthOK, this thing is HUGE. My issue for not paying attention to the measurements, but, sheesh! That reservoir adds quite a bit height. The sad part is the cooking depth you have access to between the basket sitting on the heating element and the "max oil" line is pretty shallow--it barely covers an average sized breaded chicken drummette. That means that you are required to manually turn almost all items you fry. It also puts the heating element in direct contact with the fry basket and very close to your food which could result in even more uneven cooking. Also, the fry basket doesn't sit levelly on the heating element so the oil depth is even lower for items in the far end of the basket.Heats up nicely, simple controls. The drain worked like a charm and made it very easy to clean out the accumulated crusty bits. I really like that you can clean the cooking chamber independently without worrying about getting electrical parts wet.Dumping the filtered oil back in the chamber was OK. Can't tilt it too far or oil will come out the filter port. There is a recessed "ditch" in the top that caught the oil coming out the port, but still had to wipe down the top.Overall, I wouldn't recommend purchasing this unless you absolutely hate dealing with dirty oil. 3I'm deep frying everything!!!I really like this fryer. I fried 2 lbs of frys and 1 lb of fish fillets and it took under 30 minutes total and that includes heating the oil up to temp and the frys took 15 minutes. Temp was verified pretty accurate by another thermometer. A lot of reviews I read before I purchased claimed it didn't reach temp. Also the UL label on the back says it consumes 1700 watts. I measured 1780 with my meter so I know it was giving it everything it had. Really very happy overall. Filter does a really good job of cleaning out the oil for the next run. If the oil pan is full be very careful handling it, it doesn't seal tight and the lid can and probably will pop off if you carry it vertically so don't do that. Also I set it up in the garage so the house didn't smell like fish. However with the lid and everything contained so well there was hardly any odor. 5Oil Spill - Buyer BewareI just missed the return window. After several uses, never had an issue. But last night after the oil cooled down and started draining into the lower basket, it had a hole or leak near the lever. We caught it when it leaked out 25% of the oil all over the kitchen cabinet, around the cook top, down the cabinet door, inside the cabinet and across the floor. We had oil all over the place and took an hour to clean up. I am not for sure if the plastic basket is designed for oil or why it started leaking. The basket has been empty for about a month as I recycled the old oil and added new oil last night to cook fries. Now I can't trust this device and will have to get a different model. 1I could tell something was wrong so I verified using two independent and highly accurate thermometers and this piece of crap isDoes not get to temperature. I could tell something was wrong so I verified using two independent and highly accurate thermometers and this piece of crap is almost 35 degrees under what it claims. Yes, the oil filter is great but inaccurate temps make this item useless. 1DIDN'T WORKI purchased this for my parents for Christmas as this was something they wanted. Once they finally tried it out after the holidays they couldn't get the oil to heat up over 300 degrees. I went over a few weeks later to give it a try and we made sure everything was connected, knobs were turned to where they needed to be and still could not get the oil to heat up over 300, we pulled out the cooking thermometer to check. We contacted T-fal and after a few calls have been told they need for us to send the item to them to inspect it and after they review it they will let us know if we will be able to get a new one or if they find nothing wrong with it they will return the item back to us. I explained we have not been able to use the item it is still under warranty that something is wrong we need a new one this one is faulty if it is not working the first time we tried it. We are still waiting on the results. 1Loving this fryer! What I like:The T-fal FR8000 is well built, everything lines up nicely, there are no sharp edges. It has a great heating element that heats up quickly and maintains temperature well. There are rubber seals on the lid where the basket handle sticks out as well as at the base of the controls where the lid conforms around the heating element that help keep oil and steam from running everywhere during use.The venting in the lid works without making a mess all over the unit. The viewing window in the lid is a nice touch. I like being able to check the browning without having to remove the lid. There are easy to see lines on the basin for the fill level, 1 gallon of oil puts it slightly above the max fill line. The handle on the basket folds in so the basket can be stored inside the basin with the lid on when not in use.The best part is the automatic filtering and built-in storage for oil, allowing for quick and easy cleanup! After letting the oil cool, I hand wash the heating element and just put the basin, basket, and lid in the dish washer. What I dislike:The basket hanger on the basin is very narrow. Sometimes I miss when I try to hook the basket on the hanger.Advice:Don't try to tilt the fryer forward to drain the last little bit of oil into the storage reservoir, the reservoir will leak oil all over your counter top if you do!The drain mechanism is slightly recessed below the bottom of the basin but the basin is flat so the oil does not drain entirely. T-fal, adding a slight slope in the basin would help with this. The screen filter in the drain is very fine so dirty oil does not go through, which is a good thing, but expect to lose a small amount of oil (about 2 tbsp) every time you drain and clean the unit. Keep extra oil around to top it off next time you use it.Don't overfill the basket. It is a wide basket with a single, light-weight handle. I feel like it might bend or break if I overfilled the basket and shook it too hard (like when you bang the basket to drain excess oil, putting stress on the handle).I fry at least once a week so I spent some time researching new fryers before settling on this one. I replaced a Presto unit that lasted over 6 years, but the heating element connections finally quit making contact. I would have gone with another Presto unit but oil storage was always an issue. I almost opted for an air fryer but I'm not convinced you can achieve the same deep fried taste without using oil. So far I have been very happy with the T-fal FR8000. I have owned it a week and used it four times before writing this review. 5
