Customer Reviews

Pleasantly surprised:)Like pretty much everybody else who has purchased one of these vellux blankets, I had been looking to replace one I had for years that had almost completely disintegrated. I loved that thing! When I found one on Amazon for $20, I was a little skeptical of the quality, but I bought it anyway. I also ordered a second one for my 7-year-old son, who cried when we had to throw away my old one. THEN, I started reading the reviews. I started to panic, wondering if I had made a big mistake. I thought for sure I'd be sending both of them back. Mine showed up. I half-heartedly opened the package, and right away thought the color (tornado gray) looked really nice, however, when I removed the blanket from the bag, I was a little disappointed to find that it wasn't nearly as soft as the old one. And there was definitely a noticeable smell. Sort of a chemical odor. Right away, against my better judgment, I put it in my washing machine on the gentle cycle, warm water. When I opened the lid I was pleasantly surprised to see that my blanket was fully intact. I moved it to the dryer and dried it on the low-heat setting, removed it when it was still damp, and hung it from the clothesline for about 15 minutes (this thing dries lighting fast!) I am happy to report that it is much softer from that ONE wash, and the smell is gone. It is now on our bed, where I am pretty sure it will spend many happy years. I'm so excited for my son's to come now. I think if people are expecting something as soft as the ones they have had for years, well, give it some time! Also, be gentle when washing/drying these blankets. I'm a happy customer. 5My favorite summer weight blanket!Exactly what I wanted, was replacing my old beat up one and this one is exactly the same quality as the old one was. Dont know what all these people are talking about on here when they say the blanket is not the same as it used to be. This exact blanket, packaging and all was at my local,JC Penny for $85.00. Yes, $85.00. They had a % off that price but you had to buy ladies handbags or ladies shoes of a certain amount to get the %'off. Im not a lady so I could not get the percent off. They would not even match the price of $36. Or $39. That was currently being offered on JC Penny.com. I love these Vellux blankets in the warmer months. They are perfect weight and my cats hair is so easy to remove from it. Buy this one you will be happy! 5**not** the vellux blanket you loved growing upi'm compelled to write my first review in my more-than-a-decade on amazon. this blanket (in its current version) is truly awful.i've loved the vellux brand my whole life. i had my last (good) vellux blanket since the 90s and only got rid of it as a result of an unfortunate dog-and-skunk incident.the martex label (currently owned by 'westpoint home') is now made in china (despite westpoint's claims and according to the tag on the blanket itself). it's significantly thinner than its older, american counterpart. that spongy foam feeling that the old blankets had? gone.worse yet is the smell. the new blankets reek of formaldehyde. the smell does *not* wash out -- which is curious because the *entire rest of the blanket* did.a single laundering was enough to destroy the new martex vellux blanket. what happens is that the nylon flocking comes completely undone from the paper-thin foam core in little, smelly fabric pills that get all over the washer. the remainder of the blanket pills up and falls off in the (no heat!) dry cycle. all that was left of my first westpoint martex vellux blanket (moss green, if it matters) was the flimsy grid and a few bits of formaldehyde-smelling nylon.because i have so greatly loved this product in the past, and because this particular blanket was so easily and weirdly destroyed, i re-ordered it -- a replacement for my replacement. i counted on this whole situation as having been just an awful fluke.nope. westpoint martex vellux blanket #2 fared no better. in fact, westpoint martex vellux blanket #2 broke my dryer.maybe i'm a chump, but it's only because i am so very loyal to the blanket of my youth (and twenties). i'd even be willing to try a vellux blanket again someday, so long as it's not westpoint's mertex vellux (manufactured in china).a complete disappointment. 1Warm, lightweight, but smells of VOCs.Warm and lightweight but reeks of unremovame formaldehyde smell.I had a hand-me-down vellox blanket from my parents and it is extremely soft, lightweight and warm. The blanket from my parents is 10 years old and is looking a bit warn but still in good shape. This new blanket is warm and lightweight but still starchy after 4 cycles in the washer. Per the enclosed PACKAGE INSERT, it says that the more washes it goes through, the more it will become soft.VOC central! There was a moderate chemical smell right out of the package. After 4 cycles in the washer, it STILL smells like chemicals. This is 100% nylon. Will need a few more washes...still airing it out in the living room.Patience and faith are virtues...i hope to get it as soft and VOC-free like my parents older vellux blanket. Will update in the future.Edit (10/5/17): Another review says to order directly from amazon and not a 3rd party to make sure I am receiving an authentic Vellux blanket. My invoice says the blanket is directly from Amazon. This is an original Vellux blanket Although the smell has decreased substantially, the VOC smell is still there and the blanket is still starchy after 5 cycles in the washer. *Im discontinuing the wash cycles as it is a waste of water. I'll let it air out for a few days. Otherwise, I'll throw it out.**Edit (11/4/17): I'm not the only one smelling the VOCs. It is not just me. My wife and neighbor notices the strong smell. This blanket has been airing out in the living room for a month.**TERRIBLE MANUFACTURING PROCESS** Whatever Vellux is doing to the product that causes the VOC smell should stop. At the request of my wife, this one will be thrown out.**Do a google search on VOCs. If you are a bit concerned about VOCs to your health or the health of your family, DO NOT buy this blanket!!! 1Was not pleased with it when I took it out of the ...Shipped very fast, was well boxed. Was not pleased with it when I took it out of the box, and plastic wrapping. Smelled and was stuck together like it was in there a long time, dirty and dusty looking. Really had my doubts about it. Anyhow, I washed the blanket first in my new super duper washer on 4 complete cycles to remove the smell and get it really cleaned, then in the dryer. Finally, put it on the bed and it was fine. I am using it as an undercover with a navy blue electric blanket on top. ALSO I ordered the Wedgwood Blue. It is nothing like Wedgwood blue. It is a very pale light blue which is tolerable but disappointing. It is the original Vellux blanket, but think it was old stock sitting in a warehouse somewhere for years. Not worth the expense to return it because of the color, so I will keep it but very disappointed in the color not being Wedgewood Blue. I really hate it when things are listed as a specific color, like Wedgwood Blue, then instead you get a totally different color. The color in the photo is not the color I received. 1I love it. It's not quite the same as the one I had for 15+ years but it's pretty close.I bought 2 of these blankets, and I've only washed/dried them once so far using the manufacturer's suggested settings, and they did shed a bit in both the washer and dryer (I expected that to happen at first, so I wasn't worried), but they did not develop any holes or any other problems like some people have apparently experienced. They still look brand-new and feel velvety soft.I didn't notice the lingering VOCs that some others are complaining about. When I first took them out of the package they did have a bit of an odor, which is to be expected -- and honestly, I blame the plastic/vinyl packaging for that -- but after going through the wash (using unscented detergent as I'm extremely sensitive to strong smells) they really don't have much of a smell at all, and I sleep with this blanket fairly close to my face. The VOCs associated with new car smell, new shower curtains, etc., all make me quite nauseated and give me intense headaches so if these blankets still had a bad odor I would most definitely notice. 5Not the original blanket!! Extremely disappointedI bought this blanket for my husband as a Christmas gift because he mentioned he had a navy blue Vellux blanket as a child. I also had one that was tan as a child. This is not that blanket. I m embarrassed to show my husband this blanket when he gets off work and it was supposed to be a meaningful gift.1. It s not soft at all.2. The box had damage and the bag itself was torn along the edges.3. The blanket has stains all over it. It looks like sun damage.I wouldn t recommend this product to anyone. 1Happy with Vellux blanker so far.'ve been using Vellux blankets since the 80's. The last of the ones I had was completely worn out so I started looking for a new one. I started reading reviews and was concerned that the quality had dropped. I tried to find one locally, but it appears no one carries them anymore so I went ahead and ordered. I received the new one today (Ivory full/queen size) and it seems thinner/lighter then the ones I had in the past. I noticed only a slight smell which could have been from the plastic packaging, nothing like the smell noted by others. Right away I put it in my washing machine on the gentle cycle, cold water, Woolite detergent. When I opened the lid I was pleasantly surprised to see that my blanket was fully intact. I moved it to the dryer and dried it on auto dry less, low delicate settings with two fabric softener sheets. I put it thru a second time as it was still quite damp and my clothes-line is no longer useable. I spread the blanket over my bed once I took it out of the dryer to make sure it was completely dry before folding it and storing until needed. I am happy to report that it is much softer from that ONE wash, and the smell is gone. I'm so excited for my daughter to come home from the hospital now and hope that this will keep her warm as it is much colder here then it was at her home in Southern Cal. Remember to follow the package direction and be gentle when washing/drying these blankets. So far I'm a happy customer. I only gave it three stars since I can't rate durability yet as time will tell as to how well the blanket holds up to wash and wear. 3Learn from my mistakes--Okay, I admit it wasn't one of my brightest moves, but company was a'coming and I needed soft blankets. These felt far too bristly and I didn't have time for multiple washings (Yay! No chemical smells!) so after a two minute Internet search I decided to go with a single wash and an Ultra Downy rinse along with multiple Bounce sheets in the dryer. Another reviewer mentioned she had to repeatedly clean out her lint trap but no problem here since all the lint was being plastered to my washer and dryer with Downy residue. I wouldn't really recommend the process but I'm happy to say my guest will have softer blankets to snuggle with. One star off because it will take months of laundering to achieve real softness and another star off because of the mess laundering them creates. Tiny short blanket "hairs" shed everywhere. 3Product looks like Swiss cheese after a couple months of use. Proceed with cautionLooks like I missed the end date to do the same thing that caused me to donate my previous Vellux blanket to the homeless after 20 years of use, is happening again, to the Vellux blanket i bought from Amazon. The outer soft fuzzy fabric on both sides of the blanket is coming off in pieces . And in larger and larger sections Very disappointed in this product. Should have taken it out the day I received it and then put it on the bed immediately. I wasn't expecting to see anything wrong, so I really wasn't paying attention, so it could have been delivered in that condition. 1
