Watch out for food trapped in separation in plastic in the lid. This has been a great thermos but after 1.5 years of sporadic use (1-2 days a week for daughter's school lunch), the plastic piece on the inside of the lid has partly separated from the top of the lid. More importantly, I noticed food stuff and water getting into/trapped in this cavity when I wash it. Just now...before writing this sentence...I decided to completely separate this plastic piece from the top - which seems to simply be attached with glue. Now I can definitely confirm that food seeped in through this separation and now am wondering for how long this has been happening while I've been obliviously sending my daughter off to school with her lunch in this moldy thermos. See pic - and yes, that is mold and it smells. Net-net, this is going into the trash now! 3I did a detailed test..I bought three of these, and tested them all at once.First I put hot tap water into them for a minute or so. The water was 115 degrees as indicated by a Taylor Digital Instant-Read Pocket Thermometer. I opted not to use boiling water for the pre-heat because that seemed too much of a burden to make a routine.I then put in boiling-hot water, which was verified as 212 degrees F, again using the Taylor Digital Instant-Read Pocket Thermometer.I sealed all three jars. The room temp in the kitchen was 65 degrees F - just a bit colder than "room temperature."After exactly three hours, I opened one of them, and the water was 152 degrees F.After exactly four hours, I opened the second one, and the water was 147 degrees F.After exactly five hours, I opened the third one, and the water was 138 degrees F.I also did a real food test - using Progresso Light Beef Soup. First I filled the Foogo with 116 degree tap water and let the cover sit on it while I microwaved the soup for 4 minutes. The soup pretty much refused to get over 180 F, so I did not have high hopes for it staying hot for a full 5 hours. After 5 hours, the soup was 126 degrees. Eating it was not what I would call hot, but it was as warm as our dinner often is by the time the kids settle down and we actually start eating. My wife tried it, and thought it was fine. So 5 hours is doable, but is a practical limit. Conclusion - the product works as claimed and the food will stay hot for five hours if it starts out boiling hot, the jar is at least minimally pre-warmed with hot water from a tap, and the jar is stored at room temp.If boiling hot food is cold after an hour as a few have said, you should exchange it for another one - probably didn't have the vacuum seal. 5Do NOT BuyI bought it because of the reviews. Wanted something my 5 year old could use easily. Had a replacement sent thinking the first was defective. In both pieces, was unable to screw the lid tight in one go. The lids do not shut at all. This from the Thermos brand? Will now need to get the LunchBots one, which is nearly 2 and a half times the price, but boy does that work well! 1Great quality. This little thermos is perfect for my ...Great quality. This little thermos is perfect for my 6 year old daughters lunch box. I used it this week for Mac n cheese it was the perfect size and my daughter said it was still warm 4 hours after it was packed. Easy enough for her to open and close by herself too. 4Recommend it.I tested it with hot water when I received it. 6 hours later the water is still really hot. That's more than enough time to keep my son's lunch hot until he eats it. The silicon grip on the lid helps opening it easily for a little kid. Im happy with it.I read about mold growing on the rubber seal on the lid, so I got a straw brush to wash the rim of the lid and let it air dry completely after every use. 5You can't go wrong with this item...This my third and love these. Need to make sure to remove rubber seal and wash well or they absorb odor and will grow mold under the seal.I've found that a teaspoon of liquid dishwasher soap and hot water, soak for an hour, will keep smelling fresh for next use.Keeps items HOT for three to four hours. After 4-1/2 hours temp starts to drop gradually. Works for me. I like to cook oatmeal in this jar; old fashioned oatmeal, boiling water, dash of cinnamon...1-1/2 hour trip to work...perfectly cooked when I arrive to work. This method works well for steel cut oats as well, but needs to stay in jar a little longer.Kids like using these for ravioli at school for lunch. Four hours later, still warm and ready for lunch time at school. 4Lid gets stuck and won't openI originally posted that I loved this thermos - and I did for so many reasons, it worked well, was so cute and fit great in lunchboxes - however, the lid is causing an incredible issue. I'm not sure if it has to do with the rubber gasket or the threading but sometimes, the lid doesn't screw on correctly and you can't get it to go correctly and then, it WON'T open - I mean, my 6'2" 230lb husband can't get the stinking lid off, let alone my poor 11 yo. At lunch, not one teacher in her building could open it. Who cares if it keeps something warm if you can't open it!!! The first two or three times it happened I just assumed user error, I must have done something done - but now it's been 7 or 8 times. This morning, we had to pack a new lunch - the thermos is still sitting unopened on my counter. I'm so bummed because I love everything else about this little thermos. 1Perfect for school lunch!Great thermos for packing lunch for my boy in kindergarten! Just make sure to take out the gray gasket in the top when washing or else it can grow mold. It's a great shape and size for little hands- but if it's for little ones, just be sure not to tighten the lid as tight as it can go (as long as you're not packing liquid like soup)...several days this year my son has returned with his lunch untouched because he couldn't open the tightly closed lid. :( I find that if the lid is screwed on just enough that it won't fall off, it is perfect for little hands. 5Great option for school lunches!I saw this jar when visiting my daughter's kindergarten lunch and looked it up right away - it solved the cold lunch issue! There are steps involved, so rather than packing her lunch box the night before and putting in the fridge, i now pour hot tap water into the container while reheating her food so it's piping hot, then dump the water down and put the food in. This happens around 7:15am each morning, and they don't eat lunch till 1:30 - she says lunch has been a lot more enjoyable as it is comfortably warm by that time. The container holds the perfect portion of pasta, or any other type of warm food for a young child. We usually pack some fruit on the side for dessert and she is well fed. One minor challenge with the container has been that it can be tough for her (she is 5.5) to open it - but adults in the lunch room have gotten used to being asked for help with those. I do wash it immediately after she comes home by hand and hand dry (including around the plastic ring on top, so we haven't had issues with dirt or mold - but we've also only had it for just over a week. Will update if we run into those. 5Awesome awesomeWe own 2 and both get hard core use by 2 active careless kids on a daily base for over a year. We pack hot lunches and sometimes the little left over food is still warm 6 hours later when we check it. It keeps food warm enough , I wish they would make a wide mouth divided one, we would by 2 more and it last forever ... abuse, dishwasher and tiny hands friendly . We are more than satisfied . 5
