Good insulation, poor lid design. The insulation is great. It keeps my coffee hot. The construction seems pretty solid.I do not like the seal mechanism. It has two slots in a partial arcs around a center plug. If you try to sip from a portion of rim not directly aligned with the slot, you will get hot coffee poured over the upper part of your lip causing a burn. It works well if you have the slots lined up. However, there is no way to tell where the slots are without looking carefully at the top of the lid each time you pick up the mug. In the dim light of a car in the morning, it's virtually impossible to see the slots. There is no physical markings to let you know where the slots are. So, the design is not the best. I would not buy this mug again. I would prefer something with a better seal and sip system. 3My older one took a pretty serious flying knock off a tall surface onto a ...This is now the second one of these in our household. The first was gifted to me several years ago and I still use it daily. I finally bought this one to cut down on the competition with my husband over MY mug! Durable and insulates quite well, hot or cold. I pre-warm mine with hot water before filling in the morning and my coffee stays hot for hours. Works really well without that step though. When top is closed, I can turn it upside down and shake it with no leaks or spills. This matters where I work as we are not allowed to have any drinks at our work stations that could spill or are open topped. Both my older one and this more recent one have survived some drops to the floor without major issues. My older one took a pretty serious flying knock off a tall surface onto a hard tile floor and only has a small dent on the bottom. Still functions just fine after years of use and abuse. They fit car cup holders well, and I can confidently carry them in my bag or lunch bag without fear of leaks/spills. 5Good looking Pain in the butt.Like the design, good size. Horrible functionality. There's a button on top you press to "open" the mug to drink from. This button does not close but rather just clicks into "open" position. You find yourself constantly wondering if you've left it open after taking a sip. On more than one occasion my thermos has tipped over only to begin pouring out coffee everywhere. I dropped it once and the metal ring/spacer between the lid and body of the thermos broke off. Now when I close the lid it I have to close it tighter to make up for that missing piece. Every time you want to take a sip from this thermos you have to look at the top and turn to the appropriate spot to avoid the coffee pouring out sideways and dribbling everywhere as well.Like I said, Great look, horrible functionality. 2freezing hot and burning coldFor all the talk of Yeti type cups, you just can't beat a vacuum insulated mug. As long as you keep the seal closed, this thing will retain heat/cold for eons ... ok, maybe not eons because that's an awful long time and you'd be dead so there's no way to actually know but, you get the picture, this keeps your coffee time for a really long time. One of the unique benefits to a cold drink, on the other hand, is that it actually makes the drink colder because it has secret dark magic powers. You put in a beverage with some ice. Close up the vacuum seal. Over time the ice melts but very very slowly. It doesn't melt enough to water down your drink but it melts just enough to really make your drink ice cold. It's like the global warming of mugs! 5design flaw!! - no indicator whether open or closedThis tumbler looks pretty. I bought it because it has a small hook for my tea ball and it's insulated. The insulated part is great - keep drinks HOT for a long time. Also, it holds a good amount of liquid. However, MAJOR design flaw. There is no indication as to whether it's sealed or open for drinking. So EVERY TIME I drank my tea I had a 50/50 chance of whether it was opened or closed. To combat this problem, I had to tip over my mug over the floor to see if anything came out. It is supposed to be leak proof, of which it is about 80% of the time. When I say leak proof, I think I can throw it in my bag and NOTHING comes out. I could count on this not completely spilling, but, if I were to tip over this closed tumbler, it'd still leak a drop or two, which is two drops too many whilst in my work bag :( Also, it's a pain to clean! The top comes apart in 5 or so pieces so you can clean each part, so after the first time I cleaned it, it sat on my count for weeks because I didn't want to figure out how to put it back together. What really was the final straw was one day, after boiling my tea water in a kettle, I clutched my mug with my arm and headed out to work. But as I leaned over to grab something the boiling water streamed out of the tumbler and scorched my arm! I thought it was closed but again, NO indicator showing whether it's sealed or not was a major issue here! I have since gone back to my trusted Contigos from Costco! They aren't as stylish, but who cares! They have a squeeze button AND a lock button! The pictures are my burn the day of and 10 days after. 1Second best, but not good enough. When I started using these about 10 years ago., they were great. Kept coffee hot for hours. First, the vacuum wears out. It shouldn't because it's stainless steel, but it does. Over the years, they've gotten progressively less effective, and now they keep coffee hot for maybe 2 hours, if I pre heat the mug with boiling water, If I don't, maybe I get 90 minutes. The lid is effective and I haven't seen them spill, if I'm sure to close it properly. But to clean, it's awful. The gasket has a groove in it which discolors and holds coffee smell. So it'a near impossible to really have it clean. There are three apparently vinyl gaskets, all of which are very hard to keep clean and odor free. Also, this product has lower quality and a much higher price than when I first started using it. I would go with the Zojirushi travel mug. 3Low quality lid and unacceptable customer serviceI have purchased three of these Thermos Travel Mugs over the years and my most recent purchase has been a disappointment. The quality of the lid seems to have declined from the ones on my prior purchases. Specifically, the button on the lid does not engage properly and requires me to remove the lid to correct it just about every time it is pushed. Given that my purchase is just a few months old, I expected a simple warranty exchange under the five-year warranty promoted in the description, but when I sent an email to Thermos I received a tone-deaf response outlining all of my options for purchasing replacement parts and the shipping costs associated therewith. Thinking the response was a mistake, I replied to the email, but it went unanswered. I later called the company and the representative with whom I spoke also ignored the defect and proceeded to provide the same options for purchasing replacement parts. I then asked to speak with a supervisor, but my call was sent to voicemail and I have not received a response as of this writing.I had previously tolerated what I believe to be a design flaw that others here have noted- the lid does not delineate where the liquid pours from which can be dangerous if you try to drink from the wrong spot. Also, the protective coating on the stainless steel can delaminate if the mug is put in the dishwasher so I hand wash it each time. I can no longer recommend the product, however, in light of the potential problem with the lid button and the unacceptable customer service. 1Excellent Travel Mug, some minor considerationsBought this March 15, 2015. After more than a year's use, I'm still very satisfied with product, with only a few minor issues.WHAT'S GOOD?The Sipp keeps hot liquids hot and cold liquids cold longer than expected. If left overnight, hot liquids will still be lukewarm in the morning while cold liquids are still acceptably cool. A year later, the Sipp is still completely leak proof, even when fully inverted.FLAWS, but not dealbreakers+ As other reviewers had mentioned, you have to look everytime you want to take a sip as there is no tactile indicators of where the slit openings are.+ I hand wash everything and the Sipp is easy to clean with the exception of the depressed section where the slit openings are. This might not be an issue if you use a dishwasher.+ The seal mechanisms are made of plastic and will retain odors. I've tried soaking the plastic bits in vinegar/baking soda/water solution overnight and the odor still lingers for at least a few days. This will be noticeable if you use the mug for different types of liquids (e.g. mint tea, infused water, coffee)+ If you put hot liquids into the Sipp, the central button might be hard to press once you've screwed the lid into place. DO NOT FORCE IT. Unscrew the lid, then press the button before screwing the lid back on. Forcing the button will crack the lid near the button (which I discovered much to my chagrin). Everything will still work but it spoils the aesthetics.+ Finally, DO NOT put anything beside liquids in the Sipp (e.g. mint leaves for infusion, loose tea without an infuser etc...) as it will get trapped in the lid mechanisms and you'll have a hell of a time trying to clean it. (Also discovered through experience) 4Fantastic cup, unfortunately with bad coating...These mugs are the best metal insulated mugs we've found. I often find ice cubes in an open cup (lid not on) the next morning after my daughter had ice water the evening before- still unmelted the next morning! Our family loves them, but I can't give them 5 stars because of the bummer coating on the outside... Even the plain mug has a clear plastic coating on the outside that chips over time. Granted we use the cups every day, but after a year, the outside coating is chipping off, and sometimes the chips end up in someone's mouth while drinking. They did not have this problem for the first four or five months though. Anyway, we'll probably buy more unless a better option comes up, but it's too bad such a good cup has this coating issue. 4Great mug... HORRIBLE lidThis is an update review from a previous review I made. I originally rated this mug a 5 star because it is a great mug to keep your coffee warm. In fact it keeps my coffee warm for up to 3+ hours.BUT what is making me significantly lower my review... there is rim on the lid that has a painted, plastic coating on it that peels off and becomes EXTREMELY sharp when it starts to peel off. It is sharp enough to have sliced my finger open. I have been dealing with it, but I'm tired of cutting my finger open. I called Thermos and they have replacement lids you can buy, but they too eventually peel :( I wish they had just made the entire lid black plastic. 1
