Bait and switchThese ARE NOT the updated all metal version as claimed by the primary photo on the listing. Come on Bezos are we really resorting to the bait and switch tactics of some third party resellers now?? 1FALSE ADVERTISINGI received the old version of the F-701, then one with the plastic cap! Very upset by the false advertising 1Amazing pens, terrible seller sends old style NOT all metal pen.Received the old style f-701 with the black plastic mechanism and 0.7mm ballpoint; not the advertised ALL metal with 0.8mm ballpoint. Went through the normal return/replacement process and received more of the old style plastic mechanism pens. 1Great for drawing! They started to use these pens at work recently and that has been my first exposure to them. While bored I began to doodle with them ( I am an artist) and fell in love. The amount of gradations I can get with this pen is nothing short of amazing. I can get it to be very light as well as very dark. 5I worry about people stealing itI'd been a Pilot G2 guy for the longest time, but then I saw a coworker using a Zebra F-301 and had to try it outEasily my new favorite pen, except the grip didn't work too well being a plastic without much grab and it'd just fall out of my hand at certain temperaturesEnter the F-402 - this thing felt great and I loved the grip, but the gel grip grabs the inside of some pockets and drawing it is tedious at timesThen I discovered the F-701This is a truly superior and economic writing utensil, and the final step in realizing how much of a pen snob I have become 5People are wrongThis is not 100% metal. Also, the whole buy a 402 and use its metal top piece is wrong. The threads are plastic internally where the clip/clicker screws in. Metal on the outside top cap but plastic in the top barrel where the clip/clicker installs into. That is the weakness and there is nothing you can do to fix that. Just fyi for people who really wanted a full metal pen. 1Great pen but beware, Get the NEW version (All Metal).....I own three of these pens. All purchased from the same seller (RepricedLLC), and they are very nice. You can make them awesome by upgrading the ink refill with either a Fisher Space Pen, or a Rite In The Rain refill (they're the same refill with different branding).Only issue, is that I have ordered these from another seller on Amazon (I believe Amazon.com sold or fulfilled), and the pens were not quite the same. They were the pre August 2018 model. The top ring just above the pen clip was black plastic instead of metal. The "clicker" also had more plastic. The click did not feel the same, and they were made with plastic in place of metal parts that the new version has.I sent the older models back to Amazon, and reordered from the seller that I ordered the first pen from. Those two came just like my first one. They were the new "All Metal" pens. The new pens also come with the new metal F-refills. 4The Perfect PenI purchased this pen about two years ago and I really wish I hopped on the "quality pen" bandwagon a long time ago.Throughout the years, I always thought people with nice metal pens either paid a lot of money for them, or had some strange obsession with writing utensils but oh boy was I wrong. This specific pen is very inexpensive for what you get in my personal opinion; let me explain why.I have been a long-time fan of the famous Pilot G2 model of disposable pen until I purchased the Zebra F-701 in 2015. While G2s last a long time and feel pleasant to write with, this specific pen tops every single aspect of the G2 and every other plastic pen I have used to this day.- Weight: The feel of metal while being light enough to write with comfortably.- Balance: The center of mass on this pen is just above the finger grip makes for a pleasant feel while writing.- Mechanism: The feel of the mechanism used for retracting and extending the business-end of the pen is very tactile and fluid. The audible click is satisfying but not excessively loud.- Grip: The intricate pattern employed for the grip is very functional and I prefer it very much over the rubber grips of plastic pens which slowly deteriorate over time.- Clip: The metal clip is very flexible and refuses to deform under normal usage. The shiny surface is very attractive and showcases the brand and model recessed into the metal.- Longevity: The pen retains its brushed-metal luster after almost two years of use without showing any signs of wear and tear. The mechanism seems to feel the same way it did when I removed it from its packaging.- Writing: The preinstalled pen refill writes very pleasantly with no ink blotching or streaking issues that I have experienced. The weight, balance, and grip all distill into a writing experience that I would consider writing home about (ha, ha).The Zebra F-701 is a very good value and I would highly recommend it to friends, family, and even strangers. 5false advertisingI ordered the "all metal" pen as shown in the primary product image and was delivered a pen that was made partially from plastic. On the one hand, it's a pen.On the other hand, I'm paying 7 dollars for a pen so at least deliver what you promise to deliver. 1Plastic internals & terrible ink refillsPros:- Inexpensive nice-looking pen- Almost perfect width in the grip area- Perfect knurling- Decent weight (slightly light for my taste)Cons:- Internals are all plastic (poor quality plastic in the clicker)- Included ink cartridge writes very poorly- Refill options very limited or require hacks (more below)The package claim of "metal inside and out" is a flat out lie. I'm not surprised at this price, but disappointed in the blatant false advertising. When I first picked up the pen I was suspicious of the all-metal claim -- it just doesn't have the weight. I would have left it at that if the ink cartridge wasn't so terrible. The f-series ink cartridges from Zebra are all unacceptable in my opinion. After some research, I found that the only other compatible cartridge out of the box is the Fisher Space Pen refill. The FSP is also a notoriously poor writer, unless you need to write under water or on greasy paper Despite those set-backs, I liked the feel of the pen enough that I did some experimenting to find a better refill. Most refills fit in the barrel, but they don't engage the clicker mechanism. So I embarked on an effort to tear the pen down and investigate the components. Breaking the end cap loose required pliers and minor cosmetic damage, but I didn't want to bother with any of the various methods of breaking down the thread glue. Otherwise, not too tough. To my surprise, the internal threads that receive the external metal components are plastic. Of all the areas to go cheap on an "all metal" pen! They definitely won't hold up to repeated tear downs, so I proceeded with caution.I also found that the problematic clicker mechanism was made of three small, low-quality plastic components and a light spring. As much as I use my pen throughout the average work day, I don't expect this clicker to hold up over time. With a little slicing and dicing, I was able to open up the lower end of the clicker assembly to allow an un-capped Parker-style cartridge to engage the mech. It's pretty sketchy and causes the clicker assembly to basically fall apart.Fortunately, with a little care I was able to position all the clicker pieces, reassemble the pen, and maintain perfect functionality with my new Frankenstein pen!Disclaimer: If you try this hack at home, make sure you pay attention to the assembly order Next time I replace the cartridge it's going to be a very delicate affair. After all that, the pen writes beautifully and my refill options exploded! With minor alterations to the clicker, Zebra could have made this pen an out of the box winner. Most people won't go through all the fuss to get this working (my wife laughed at me). Zebra either needs to make good cartridges or revise this pen to play nice with others.tl;dr: If you care about the writing experience as much as the aesthetics of the pen, keep looking or prepare for some tedious hacking. 2
